Rev. Dr. Carrol James "Pete" Calvert, age 84, of 1820 Mt. Lebanon Rd., Pauline, widower of Doris Lawson Calvert, passed away Saturday, November 1, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Dr. Calvert was born in Gramling, SC, June 2, 1930, a son of the late John Earl Calvert and Sunnie Hattie Nichols Calvert. He was a 1948 graduate of Boiling Springs High School and went on to study at North Greenville University, Furman University, and the Southeastern Theological Seminary. Dr. Calvert retired after 54 years of serving as a Baptist minister. He had served at Lakeview Baptist of Charlotte, NC, Bethel Baptist of Prosperity, Central Missionary Baptist of Cowpens, First Baptist Church of Marietta, SC, Massey Hill Baptist of Fayetteville, NC, Hillside Baptist of Hope Mills, NC, and Oakdale Baptist of Fairmont, NC. After retiring, Dr. Calvert served as interim pastor of Padgett's Creek Baptist and New Life Baptist of Union. He was currently a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. Dr. Calvert was a veteran of the US Navy having served during the Korean War. He was a member of the Hejaz Shrine Temple and Prosperity Masonic Lodge # 115. He played Pro-Am Golf, was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed gardening. Dr. Calvert was affectionately known to his neighbors and close friends as the Colonel. Surviving are a daughter, Caron Calvert Clark of Pauline; a granddaughter, Weslie Clark of Toccoa, GA; two sisters, Evelyn Hughes of Greer, and Ruth Hammett and husband Carl of Campobello; three brothers, John Calvert and wife Mary of Forest City, NC, Harry Calvert and wife Maxine of Goose Creek, and Heyward Calvert and wife Vivian of Inman and numerous nieces and nephews. Dr. Calvert was predeceased by two sisters, Marie Calvert and Margaret Cantrel and five brothers, Dr. Leroy Calvert, Bob Calvert, Ralph Calvert, Joe Calvert and Ray Calvert. Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Monday, November 3, 2014 at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Melvin Shelton and Rev. Josh Freeman. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 2:00 until 3:00 PM Monday prior to the services. Memorials may be made to Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church Building Fund, 2153 Mt. Lebanon Rd., Buffalo, SC 29321. The family will be at the home, 1820 Mt. Lebanon Rd., Pauline.
