September 25, 2019 Mrs. Catherine V. Smith, age 82, of Union, passed away Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Mrs. Smith was born June 20, 1937 in Union, a daughter of the late Lucas Carson Varner and Louise Bobo Varner. She was a 1955 graduate of Union High School. Mrs. Smith retired after over 40 years from United Merchants Buffalo Plant and later worked for Arthur State Bank-Plaza Branch in Union. She was a member of Putman Baptist Church, however she attended Buffalo Baptist Church where she was active with the Willing Workers Sunday School Class, Patchwork Quilters Group, and the Twisted Stitcher's Crochet Club. Mrs. Smith also Supervised the Umpires of the Union County Recreation Department. She was active with the Union County Fair Association, a poll worker with the Union County Voter Registration Office, and the Clemson Extension where she taught classes in sewing and cooking. Mrs. Smith enjoyed quilting, playing piano, and traveling. Surviving are two children, Cathy Poole and husband James of Buffalo and Sammy Smith of Union; five grandchildren, Erica Haney, Matthew Haney, Holly Smith, Trey Smith and wife, Ivy, and Katie McCutcheon and husband Corey; four great-grandchildren, Madison Haney, Lucas Haney, Bella Walker, and Giovanni Gentry; great-grand fur babies, Bruno, Jace, and Asher; and special friends, Betty Stevens, Sharon Stevens, and Gail Johnson. She was predeceased by her longtime companion J.R. Putnam. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, September 27, 2019 at Buffalo Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Michael Bell, Rev. Doug Estes, and Rev. Tommy Mann. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Michael Smith, Robbie Gentry, Kevin Morrow, Ricky Harris, Tommy Petty, and Tim Mitchell. The following are asked to sit in a group and form the honorary escort, the Patchwork Quilter's Club, Willing Workers Sunday School Class, Mike and Cheryl Moss, Raymond and Jo Ellen Addis, and "Speedy" and Anita Ward. Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303. The family will be at her home.
