Command Sergeant Major, Guerry Howard Griggs, age 65, U.S. Army retired, of Spring Lake, N.C. passed away August 8, 2014 after being air lifted from Womack Hospital to UNC Hospital for emergency surgery. Born June 25, 1949 in Union, SC, he was the son of the late Fred S. Griggs & Ruth Howard Griggs, the grandson of the late Roy W. Howard & Lora Davis Howard of Greenville. Mr. Griggs served in the US Army 30 years, joined when he was 17 in 1967 and retired in 1997. As a Vietnam Veteran he received the Purple Heart award in addition to numerous others. He served as a Drill Sergeant twice, receiving the Honor Drill Sergeant of the year. Mr. Griggs had numerous deployments during his career. While in Germany, he served with the late Colonel Whitener of Union and attained the highest enlisted rank as Command Sergeant Major. Surviving are his wife, Linda Kirby Griggs of Spring Lake, NC; daughter, Kristy Griggs-Bruhn and husband Eddie; grandchildren, Steven, Megan, Alan and Ethan and four great-grandchildren of Springfield, Missouri; brothers; Sam and wife Peggy Griggs of Orlando, FL, Raymond O. and wife Ann Griggs of Powdersville, one sister, Teri and husband Grady Kirby of Jonesville. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held 2:30 PM Sunday, September 7, 2014 at Covenant Baptist Church conducted by Pastor Wayne Cooke. Prior to this service one was held at Main Post Chapel in Fort Bragg, NC. CSM Griggs will be laid to rest in The Arlington National Cemetery in December.
