Douglas Marshall Shields, age 70, of Union, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed from this life to the next on Saturday, December 23, 2023. Doug was born in Bedford, IN to John T. And Betty L. Shields on October, 24, 1953. Theirs was a large, boisterous and happy family which provided many opportunities for growth, learning, and adventure. Doug graduated from Terre Haute North Vigo High School in Terre Haute, IN. He joined the Marine Corps and served for four years, then returned to college and graduated from the University of Mississippi, completing a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering Degree in three years. Doug also attended the University of Maryland in pursuit of an MBA. He enjoyed his work as a manufacturing engineer for companies such as Torrington, Cutler-Hammer, and Automated Engineering Equipment before retiring in 2021. He was a lifelong Presbyterian, serving as a Deacon and Elder, and was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church of Union for more than thirty years. He was also happy to serve on the Union County Voter Registration and Election Commission. Doug was an avid reader, loved to cook, loved kayaking and other adventures, and loved creative pastimes such as carving and lamp-making. He also loved history, crossword puzzles, movies, theater, traveling, and most of all, spending time with his family. Doug is survived by his wife of fifty years, Victoria Lincoln Shields, his children, Gregory Lincoln Shields of
Blackwood, NJ; Kathleen Elizabeth Shields-Williams and her husband, Stanley L. Williams, of Rock Hill, SC; daughter-in-law, Hannah Joy Perkins Shields, of Greenville, SC; Grandsons Samuel Jesse Shields and John Michael Shields, both of Greenville, SC; and Granddaughters Madison Everly Williams, and Mirabelle Eleanor Williams, both of Rock Hill, SC; siblings Susan Shields Goldsboro and Janet Shields Lowe (John) of Martinsville, IN, John Shields (Naida) of Union, and David Shields (Patricia) of Spartanburg, SC, along with niece and nephews, and many extended family members and countless friends. Doug was preceded in death by his son, Brian Douglas Shields, his brother James Shields, and his parents.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:30 PM, Thursday, December 28, 2023 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home. As per Doug's wishes, no others services will be held.
