Mrs. Eleanor Ashe Boling, 91, (called Aunt Sissy by some and Plum by others) from Lockhart, S.C. went to the Lord peacefully on December 20 at the Agape Upstate Community Hospice House in Landrum. She was born in Lockhart July 2, 1929 to Clyde Freeman and Carrie Ashe. She is preceded in death by her husband of 51 years Everett, her son Tim, her granddaughter Jennifer, her mother and father, and two brothers James Neely and CF Ashe. She is survived by her sister Betty Steen, her son Kim Boling and Vickie, and her son Everett Boling Jr. and his wife Dare. Her four surviving grandchildren are Alan Boling, Wesley Boling, Jamie Nichols and Lori Nichols.
Eleanor married June 9, 1951, and spent the next 30 years being a military wife traveling where the Air Force took them. When Everett was deployed, Eleanor reared (some say with an iron hand) her boys in Lockhart. After Everett's retirement they moved back to Lockhart permanently and opened "E and E Ceramics" shop. Customers still talk about the wonderful and fun times they had at learning ceramics. She brought out the budding artist in all who came to the shop. Not too many know, but she debated opening up a bakery, but choose ceramics instead. She had amazing cake baking and decorating skills making everything from wedding cakes to birthday cakes and everything in between.
Eleanor was married for 51 years. She was an Elder in the Lockhart Presbyterian Church. She was an active member in the senior citizens group. She was a driving force (treasure and secretary) to keep the Ashe reunion (her Dad's side) and the Purcell reunion (her Mom's side) active though all the years. She was a professional party planner before the term actually existed.
She was very detailed orientated, energetic and motivated in everything she raised her hand to do, and that was a lot. She was truly a unique individual and set in her ways about life and everyone who knew her knew that. She was a truly opinionated lady with a loving heart. In completing tasks, she took pride in running circles around friends and family who were much younger than she was. She was one of a kind.
She loved to decorate her home every holiday season. She really enjoyed Trick-or-Treat and handing out candy to the children. Each change in season featured hanging a carefully selected edition of hand-made curtains in every room in the house. In her later years, her sons struggled to keep her from climbing ladders in the home. She was quite the seamstress. Christmas was her favorite though; during which she would make at least 20 different kinds of candy, an assortment cookies, and Christmas Party Mix . Tradition held that family and friends would arrive armed with empty Tupperware containers and leave with piles of treats. She was old school and had to wait until after Thanksgiving to put up Christmas. She always started making candy on December 16th. This year she will be making Christmas treats in Heaven, with just a little later start date.
Graveside Services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, December 27, 2020 at Bullock Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Steve Lemons. Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Saturday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Union County Council on Aging, 237 N. Gadberry Street, Union, SC 29379.
