Mrs. Elizabeth Vassy Whitmire, age 94, of 418 Jones Ford Road, Union, widow of William C. Whitmire, Sr. passed away Sunday, September 14, 2014 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home. Mrs. Whitmire was born in Cherokee Co., SC on January 31, 1920 a daughter of the late S. Barney Vassy and Anna Derrick Vassy. She was a graduate of Gaffney High School and Limestone College. She was retired from Union County Schools after twenty-one years, having taught English at Union High School. Prior to teaching in Union, Mrs. Whitmire taught for twenty years at Cross Anchor High School in Spartanburg County. She was a member of Padgett's Creek Baptist Church where she was a part of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class and the Medora Murphy Circle, as long as her health permitted. Mrs. Whitmire was also a member of UDC DAR, Delta Kappa Gamma-Sigma Chapter, and a member of the Union County Retired Teachers Association. She was an active supporter of Clemson Athletics for over 60 years. Surviving are two sons, William C. "Billy" Whitmire, Jr. and wife Ruby and Jessie B. Whitmire and wife Brenda all of Cross Keys; three grandchildren, Bud (William C., III) Whitmire, Beth Green and husband Rocky, and Kimberly Parkins; four great-grandchildren, Kayla Green, Grace Green, Jonathan Parkins, and Felica Parkins; one great-great-grandchild, Carleigh Sumner; two nephews, Hampton Miller and Barney Miller; and special friends, Marian Estes and Donald Estes. She was predeceased by two sisters, Ellen Walker and Anna Louise Miller. Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Carrol Caldwell. Burial will follow at Padgetts Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be "Bud" Whitmire, Hampton Miller, Barney Miller, Jonathan Parkins, Rocky Green, Frank Wilburn, and Maxie Stewart. The following are asked to form the honorary escort, Jim Rice, Sally Summers, Tommy Bishop, Grace Lybrand, Betty Holcombe, Earl Lawson, Belton Lawson, Marian Estes, Donald Estes, Jerry Harris, Nancy Long, Mary Jean Price, Myrtis Austin, the members of Willing Workers Sunday School Class, and the Staff of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home Unit One. Visitation will immediately follow the committal service in Padgetts Creek Baptist Church.
