Mrs. Elsie Small McGill of Greenville and formerly of Union, passed into the presence of God Monday, August 31, 2026. She was the widow of William Meek McGill, Sr., to whom she was married for forty-six years.
Mrs. McGill was born in Lancaster County, December 8, 1932. She was the last surviving child of the late Roy O. Small and Ora Lea Black Small. She is survived by a son, Dr. Eric Small McGill and wife Pamela Elaine McGill of Greenville; three grandchildren, whom she loved deeply, William Eric McGill, Emily McGill Gibson and husband Joseph Gibson, III, and Elizabeth Ann McGill. She also leaves behind many kind and thoughtful nieces and nephews. Mrs. McGill was predeceased by a son, William Meek McGill, Jr. and siblings, Jerrie Small Chewning, Woodard Small, Alan Small, Henry Small, Martha Small Kirk and Ford Small.
Mrs. McGill attended North Greenville College and received her undergraduate degree from Furman University and Master’s Degree in Education from Converse College. She enjoyed a teaching career of thirty years in the public school system of South Carolina.
Reading, walking and playing bridge where her favorite pass times. She belonged to the the Criteria Book Club, the Bridge Club and the Cotillion Club of Union. She enjoyed working as a volunteer with the Union Junior Charity League, the American Red Cross and the Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mrs. McGill was a member of the Union Presbyterian Church and enjoyed serving her church in different capacities through the years.
Elsie would like to be remembered as a good and faithful wife, a kind and loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Sunday, September 6, 2026 at Union Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. Dr. Steve Lemons. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be William Eric McGill, Joseph Gibson, III, Sammy Diamonduros, Pete Diamonduros, Bob Jeter, Kenneth Chewning, Keith Small and John Chewning.
