Freddie L. Shirley Union, Sc

Mr. Freddie L. Shirley, age 85, husband of Leila Jones Shirley of 205 Lakeview Heights, Union, passed away Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Shirley was born in Union, May 4, 1929, a son of the late John Frazier Shirley and Ruth Middlebrooks Shirley. He was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Milliken. After retirement, Mr. Shirley worked for 16 years with the Union Co. Council on Aging. He was a veteran of the US Army having served during the Korean War. Mr. Shirley was a member of Mon Aetna Baptist Church where he was a former choir member, a Sunday School teacher and a Deacon. Mr. Shirley was also a member of the John A. Fant Masonic Lodge and the American Legion Post 22. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving in addition to his wife of 57 years are numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Shirley was predeceased by four sisters, Virginia Redmon, Ethel Russell, Marjorie Morris and Doreatha Goodson. Funeral services will be held 2:30 PM Thursday, December 18, 2014 at Mon Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green, Rev. Wayne Cooke and Rev. Bob Cato. Burial with Military Honors will be at Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Dennis Russell, Phil Russell, Bryan Morris, Mike Redmon, Clint Goodson and William Earl Sprouse. The following are asked to serve as the honorary pallbearers, Monty Cooke, Lamar Redmon, Harold Lawson, Patrick Russell, Stephen Russell, members of the Freddie Shirley Sunday School class, employees of Gentiva Home Health and employees the Union Co. Counsel on Aging. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:30 PM Wednesday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home. Memorials may be to the Mon Aetna Baptist Church Building Fund, 1431 Lockhart Hwy., Union, SC 29379. The family will be at the home, 205 Lakeview Heights, Union.
