Mr. Gilbert Edward "Nig" Smith, age 74, husband of Sybil Smith of 219 Old Pump Station Rd., Union, passed away Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at his home. Mr. Smith was born February 14, 1942 in Union a son of the late Claude P. Smith and Annie Bell Smith. He was a retired mechanic having worked at B.H. Motors for many years. Mr. Smith loved Bluegrass music especially when the fields turn brown and was a fisherman at heart. Surviving in addition to his wife are one daughter, Lisa Reenbenaker and husband Robert; two sons David Smith and wife Laurie and Gilbert E. Smith, Jr. (Shortly Lo) and wife Arrie; two sisters, Pearl Inman and Linda Thomas and husband Preston; two brothers, James Monroe Smith and wife Nancy and Kent Smith and special friend Debbie Inman; a sister-in-law, Thelma Smith; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by four brothers, Carl Lewis Smith, William Charles Smith, LJ Smith, and Harold Smith and two sisters, Hazel Gregory and Della Smith Moss. Mr. Smith left behind two special boys, a grandson, Matthew Smith of the home and Caleb Deal whom he loved so much. All of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were loved just as much. He also left behind two beloved dogs, Blue and Snowball. The family would like to thank the staff and nurses of Medi-Home Hospice, Dr. Wentz and Staff, Palmetto Drug Store Employees, Upstate Medical, Gibbs Cancer Center, Dr. Juliette Sadd and the numerous friends that have shown their care and concern to Mr. Smith during his illness. Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, September 30, 2016 at Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Mark Truitt and Rev. Scott Cobb. Burial will follow in Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Smith will be carried to the home, 219 Old Pump Station Rd., Union, where the family will receive friends after 2:00 PM Thursday. Visitation will also be held 1:00 until 3:00 PM Friday prior to the services at the church. Active pallbearers will be the following nephews, Kenny Smith, Paul Gregory, Randy Gregory, Joey Gregory, Dennis Smith, Donald Ray Smith, and Dillion Smith. The following are asked to form the honorary escort, William Moss, Ricky Thompson, Frank Lancaster, Ray Bailey, Billy Millwood, Ken Eades, Robbie Wells, Bogard Land, Lewis Moss, Pee Wee Humphries, Medi Home Hospice Nurses, Jessica Paige and Chasity Rochester.
