Gloria G. Carwile

April 11, 1929 — February 17, 2025

Union, SC

Gloria G. Carwile, age 95, wife of the late John P. Carwile of 301 Glendale Road, Union, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, February 17, 2025.

Gloria was born in Fair Play, South Carolina on April 11, 1929. She was the daughter of the late Wallace and Bessie Glymph.  She was a 1952 graduate of Lander College with a B.A. in Home Economics.

Gloria served the Lord with a heart and a gift for teaching students with special needs at Excelsior Elementary and Union High School and she loved her students like her own.  She retired from teaching in 1990.

When at Union High School, Mrs. Carwile's class, with the help of Dale Smith, started making ceramics and crafts and eventually began selling their handmade items at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter to the public.  It was always a huge success, raising enough money to carry her students to Myrtle Beach for a week, all expenses paid.

Mrs.  Carwile was always thinking "outside the box" to help teach her students important life skills to survive and thrive after they graduated, and many succeeded and stayed in touch till her last days.

After retiring, Gloria enjoyed time with her family, being a caregiver to her husband, and traveling with her children, grandchildren, friends and her sister, Kathleen Blalock.

Gloria was an active member of First Baptist Church till her declining health in her later years.

She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother as well as a dear friend to all who knew her.  She loved the Lord with her whole heart and her desire was to live a life pleasing to her Savior, Jesus.

Surviving are her two daughters: Gail C.  Hamrick (Wardlaw) of Gaffney and Allison C.  Wilson (Phil) of Inman; one son Brooks Carwile of Union and a daughter-in-law, Ann T. Carwile, of Seneca; 10 grandchildren: Catherine H. Hampton (Kevin), Cameron Hamrick (Brooke), Addison Hamrick, Jonathan Carwile (Julie), Preston Carwile (Haley), Paige C. Bowser (Ben), Caroline C. Morgan, Preston B. Carwile Jr, McKenzie C. Alexander (Dan), and Branch Wilson; 10 great-grandchildren: Patrick Hampton, Peyton Hampton,  Paxton Hampton,  Adrienne Hamrick, Mary Charles Hamrick, Lily Carwile, Kevin Carwile, Wesley Bowser, Spencer Bowser and Tripp Morgan.

Preceding Gloria in death was her son Steve Carwile of Seneca; two sisters: Frances Glymph of Fair Play and Kathleen Blalock of Louisville, Ky. and lifelong friend and assistant Elizabeth Gilliam of Union.

The family gives a special thanks to her devoted, long-time next door neighbors, Helen and Gus Diamaduros, who were like family and shared a deep love and support over the years.

Thank you to her dear friends and former neighbors Elsie McGill and Mary Lou Gregory who never lost touch and to Beth Bevis, a devoted friend and caregiver.  We also thank Crescent Hospice group and their nurses, Christy and Tara and aid, Reneather for the care and support given to mom and the family.

The funeral will be Saturday, March 8th, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Union, conducted by Reverend Kevin Hampton.

The family will receive friends Saturday, March 8th from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at First Baptist Church before the funeral service.

A private burial will be Sunday, March 9th, at 3:30 p.m. at Upper Long Cane Cemetery in Abbeville.

Memorials can be made to Samaritan's Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607 or to the charity of your choice.
