Mr. Harry O. Helms, age 87, of 2029 Jonesville Hwy., Union, widower of Ruby Irene Wix Helms died Friday evening, September 26, 2014 at the Laurens County Memorial Hospital. Mr. Helms was born in Union County May 28, 1927, a son of the late Thomas and Pearl Bullock Helms. He was a member of the Foster's Chapel United Methodist Church where he had served on the board of trustees and was a member of the Carlisle Hart Sunday School Class. Mr. Helms was a community minded individual and volunteer, he worked many hours to insure the success of the Bonham Fire Department where he had served as the first fire chief. He also, was active in the Union County Sheriff's Office Reserve Deputy Program, where he volunteered for over 20 years. Following his time with the Sheriff's Office he was appointed a South Carolina State Constable by the governor. Mr. Helms had also served on the board of directors for the Union County Fair. He was a retired residential building contractor. Surviving are two daughters: Linda Mitchell and husband Terry and Carolyn Belue and husband Neil all of Union, a son Ken Helms and wife Emily of Greenville, a brother, Bobby Helms and wife Becky of Union, three grandchildren Stephanie Russell and husband Stephen, Josh Belue and wife Crystal and Allen Mitchell and wife Kristin all of Union; three great grandsons and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Helms was predeceased by a granddaughter Leah Mitchell, a sister Helen Pace and a brother Gene Helms. A service celebrating Harry Helms life will be held 4:00 PM Sunday, September 28, 2014 at Foster's Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Glenn Ribelin. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be David Taylor, Steve Tramell, Bryan Brackins, Toney Farr, Joey English and Wayne Tollison. The following are asked to assemble at the church at 2:45 PM to form the honorary escort: Deputies and staff at the Union County Sheriff's office, volunteers of the Bonham Fire Department, directors of the Union County Fair Board, members of Carlisle Hart Sunday School Class and Roger Gregory, Wayne Baber and Phillip Sprouse. The family will receive friends 2:30 until 3:45 PM Sunday prior to the service at the church. The family is at his home, 2029 Jonesville Hwy., Union, SC 29379. Memorials may be made to Foster's Chapel United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 392 Pea Ridge Hwy., Jonesville, 29353.
