Hunter S. Harris, Union, Sc Jr.

Mr. Hunter Sells Harris, Jr., age 84, husband of Anna Ruth Roberts Harris, of 207 Glendale Rd., Union, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at the Spartanburg Hospital for Restorative Care. Mr. Harris was born in Union, October 1, 1929, a son of the late Hunter S. Harris, Sr. and Etha Palmer Harris. A graduate of Union High School, he continued his education at Clemson University and received his BS degree in Civil Engineering in 1952. While at Clemson, he was part of the Clemson Senior Platoon and has faithfully remained a supporter of the school by being an IPTAY Representative and supporting the Alumni Association. After graduation, Mr. Harris served in the US Army and earned his commission as a First Lieutenant in 1954. He continued serving as an engineer with the US Army Corps of Engineers during which time he earned his PE (Professional Engineering) status. After service with the Army Corps of Engineers, Mr. Harris went to work for and retired from Lockhart Power Company. Mr. Harris was a member of First Baptist Church where he was a member of the Sam Cain Adult 3 Men's Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Union and had previously served as President. He was a supporter of the Union Co. YMCA and a member of the Union Co. VFW. Surviving in addition to his wife of 58 years, Ann Ruth Roberts Harris of the home is a daughter, Jane Hunter Barnhill and husband Mark of Clemmons, NC; a son, Hunter S. Harris, III and wife Perry of Summerville; four grandchildren, Ana Hill and husband Jade of Summerville, Jane Palmer Harris of Studio City, CA, Nancy Hunter Barnhill and Preston Barnhill both of Clemmons; and one great-granddaughter, Ansley Grace Hill. Mr. Harris was predeceased by a sister, Nancy Hunter Harris. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, May 17, 2014, at the First Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Rick Pendleton. Burial with Military Honors will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bannie Kennedy, Preston Barnhill, Jade Hill, John Brown, Ace Comer, Marvin Bettis, Jeff Roberts, Tim Roberts and Buck Roberts. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 until 2:00 PM Saturday prior to the services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Union Co. YMCA, 106 Lakeside Drive, Union, SC 29379 or to First Baptist Church Union, 405 E. Main St., Union, SC 29379.
