Mr. James Ralph Childers, age 90, widower of Janie Margaret Scott Childers of 203 Putman Rd., Buffalo, SC passed away peacefully Thursday, June 8, 2023 at his home.
Born March 31, 1933, he was the son of the late Samuel and Ella Mae Revels Childers. He was a graduate of Lockhart High School and Spartanburg Technical College. He served 21 years in the United States Airforce. While in the Air Force, he was stationed in Lockland, Texas for basic training, followed by Donaldson Air Force Base in Greenville, SC, he was then stationed in Japan, again at Donaldson Air Force Base, 2 years in England, Homestead Florida Air Force Base (Orlando), Vietnam, Charleston Air Force Base, Fort Campbell Air Force Base, and Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. After retiring from the air force, Mr. Childers worked with South Carolina Job Services until he retired.
Mr. Childers was a faithful member of Putman Baptist Church where he loved the Lord. At Putman Baptist Church, he sang in the Adult Choir, was a former deacon, served many years as church treasurer, and several other various committees. He was presently a member of the Young at Heart Sunday School Class.
Surviving are two sons; Scott Childers and wife Nancy and Glen Childers and wife Teresa of Buffalo; Grandchildren, Brandy Palmer of Buffalo, Jessica Sherbert and husband Scott of Union, Charlie Childers of Buffalo, Kala Robinson and husband Larry "Turtle" of Union, Samantha Childers and Tia Childers, both of Buffalo; great-grandchildren, Krista Terry and husband Cameron of Greer, Brooklyn Williams and husband Patrick of Buffalo, Jay, Mia, Ben and Sam Sherbert of Union, Dillan McAlister of Roebuck and wife Keely, Emma Grace Childers of Buffalo, and Dixie and Aria Robinson of Union; great-great grandchildren, Carter, Silas, and Hayes Terry of Greer; Oakley Williams of Union, and Beau McAlister of Roebuck. Mr. Childers was predeceased by a brother, Harvey Childers, a sister, Ellen Childers Gault, and a great-granddaughter, Dani Lynn Robinson. Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, June 11, 2023 at Putman Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Ted Hodges and Rev. Donald Tillman. The burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM prior to the services at the church. The following are asked to serve as active pallbearers, Deryl Gault, Harold Gregory, David Heatherly, Tommy Petty, James Poole, and Ricky Scott. Members of the Young at Heart Sunday School Class, Deacon and former Deacon are asked to serve as the honorary pallbearers. The family would like to extend a special Thank You to the nurses and staff of Union Medical Center, Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, Agape Hospice, and all the caregivers for all the attention, devotion and love shown to him. Memorials may be made to Putman Baptist Church, 3692 Buffalo West Springs Hwy., Buffalo, SC 29321. The family is at his home, 203 Putman Rd., Buffalo, SC.
