Jane Warner Peay, 91, of White Oak at North Grove in Spartanburg and formerly of Jonesville passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.
Mrs. Peay was born on February 9, 1933, to Maruice Jay and Esther Kilgore Warner in Snedekerville, PA. Raised on a dairy farm in the Coryland community of Bradford County, PA, she especially enjoyed ice skating on frozen ponds during long winter months. After the family moved to South Carolina, she graduated from Rock Hill High School and earned a bachelor's degree in Home Economics Education from Winthrop College. She taught at McBee and Pageland High Schools where she met her future husband, William "Buddy" Peay. They moved to Jonesville in 1957. Mrs. Peay taught at Jonesville High School for 31 years. She served her church, New Hope UMC, as needed. She was an avid reader, skilled seamstress and crafter, enjoying a variety of needlework and painting media until she discovered quilting. She was a member of several quilt groups and guilds, including years of membership in the Union County Clemson Extension FCL Patchwork Quilters.
Thankful for fond memories are four children and their spouses: Janelle P. "Jan" and Robert G. Knox, II of Oldsmar, FL; Warner A. "Buck" and Kim Scarborough Peay of Jonesville, John "Jay" and Donna Arledge Peay of Clinton, SC and Kenneth R. "Ken" and Leadaire Spencer Peay of Buford, GA: seven grandchildren: Hailey P. Martin and husband Wade of Boiling Springs, SC, Hannah P. Anthony and husband Will of Union, SC, Candace "Cea" K. Hartley and husband Josh of Tampa, FL, Robert G. "Bert" Knox, III of Tampa, FL, Julia "Celeste" P. Santos and husband Jeff of Long Beach, CA, William "Spencer" Peay of Atlanta, GA, and "Jay" Warner Peay of Chicago, IL.; great-grandsons, William "Hayes" Martin and Bowman Lee Anthony and great-granddaughters, Peyton L. Hartley, Mary Margaret Anthony, and Reese J. Hartley; her sisters-in-laws, Mrs. Betty P. Davis of Davidson, NC; Mrs. Ann C. Peay of Monroe, NC and Mrs. Mary Ann P. Miles of Columbia, SC; several cousins and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, four brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law predeceased Mrs. Peay: John B. and wife LaRose R. Peay of Monroe, NC; Nick A. Peay of Pageland, SC; Cunningham "Chink" Peay of New Bern, NC, and M. L." Bud" Davis of Davidson, NC.
The family extends special thanks to the staff and medical team at White Oak at North Grove and to Spartanburg Regional Hospice for their care of Mrs. Peay.
A graveside service will take place at New Hope United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at 11 a.m. Reverend Dr. Jim Spencer will officiate.
