Jean Billings Cathcart, affectionately known as Nanny Bug to her family and friends, went to be reunited with her husband Ed, on Friday, October 29, 2021. Jean was a beautiful, loving, kind, sweet, and giving person.
She was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina on April 29, 1931. She was the widow of James Edward Cathcart "Ed". Nanny Bug enjoyed growing flowers, reading, and cooking for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt. She was also a very strong-willed lady and the matriarch of the family. She retired from Conso Mill in Union and was then called by Dave Edwards to run the café in his dealership. She enjoyed 18 years of taking care of her extended family at Dave Edwards Toyota. She and Mr. Bobby opened up the café every morning for 18 years and a very special friendship was formed. Jean was famous for her BLT sandwich and customers came regularly to visit and eat lunch while they were getting their service work done. Another very special friendship she developed with Mrs. Joyce Condrey. Together they ran the café and made sure everyone was taken care of.
Jean was the daughter of the late Garland and Bernice Billings. She is survived by three daughters, Patti Rice and her husband Stanley, Kathy Farr and her husband Tommy, and Susan Morris and her husband Ken. Jean lost her daughter June Lancaster in 2012 to Cancer. She is survived by three sisters, Sarah Cathcart, Betty Wilburn and her husband Donald, Joyce Pettit and husband Ronnie, and her brother Robbie Billings and his wife Madge. She lost a very special brother-in-law, Franklin Cathcart, two sons-in-law, Mike Shropshire and Dennis Lancaster; and a great-granddaughter, Mia Shropshire.
Jean leaves behind nine grandchildren; Kevin and Lee Shropshire, April Thomason, TJ and Daniel Farr, David Lancaster, Anna Hodge, and Olivia (Pa) Morris; ten great-grandchildren, Riley, Jasper, and Sidney Shropshire, Michael and Abby Lancaster, Carsyn, Addison, and Emma Kate Thomason, and Layne and Ally Farr.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM. Funeral services will be immediately following the visitation at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church conducted by the Rev, Melvin Shelton and Rev. James Goudelock. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.
