May 8, 2016 Mrs. Jennie Viola O'Dell, age 94, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother of 105 Reed Street, Union, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, May 7, 2016. Mrs. O'Dell was the widow of James Cecil O'Dell, Sr. Mrs. O'Dell was born in Union, SC February 12, 1922, a daughter of the late A.L. Garner and Sarah Brandon Garner. She was a 1939 graduate of Union High School and was a homemaker and later retired from Union County School System following twenty-one years of service. Mrs. O'Dell was a life long loyal member of Bethel United Methodist Church. She started teaching Sunday School at the age of sixteen. Mrs. O'Dell was active throughout the years in United Methodist Women having held offices at the local, district, and state levels. She was also a member of the choir, a Lay Speaker and a member of almost every committee within the church over her ninety-four years. Surviving are a son, James C. "Jim" O'Dell, Jr. of Union; two grandsons: Nathan B. O'Dell and wife Toni of Texas and James Allen O'Dell of Union; two great-grandsons: Ethan O'Dell and Tristan O'Dell; a great-granddaughter, Cassidy O'Dell; a very special friend, Loretta Patrick and a host of loving nieces, nephews and friends. Mrs. O'Dell was predeceased by a sister and seven brothers. She will always be remembered for being a "prayer warrior" and for her unconditional love of God, her family, her church family, and those she came in contact with, both young and old throughout her life. The family would like to say a special "Thank You" to Dr. David Keith and his staff, Medi Home Hospice, and a loving caregiver, Kim Jennings and Loretta Patrick, her most special friend. Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at Bethel United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Merritt Wentz. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The following are asked to sit in a group: members of the Choir, the Adult Sunday School Class and Past and Present members of the UMW Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Monday evening at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 1705 Lockhart Hwy, Union, SC 29379. The family is at the home, 105 Reed Street, Union.
