John P. Brown, Jr.

Mr. John Pat Brown, Jr., 87, of Union, passed away on January 7, 2024, at Spartanburg Medical Center.  He was the husband of Brenda Cohen Brown to whom he was married for 63 years.

John was an Engineer by trade and a fixer of all things.  He was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He was an active member of his community serving in many capacities, Mason, Shriner, Lions Club, Jaycees, Habitat for Humanity, Missionary work, Meals on Wheels, Civil Air Patrol, Military service, YMCA Board, and Boy Scout Leader. He was a member of First Baptist Church and a lifetime Deacon.

John graduated from Clemson University where he was a letterman athlete. He was an avid Clemson fan and received the Super Tiger Award in 2018.  Most importantly he was devoted to his family and friends.

John was born on July 15, 1936 in Sedalia but made his home in Union. He was the last surviving member of the Brown family. He was predeceased by his parents and John P. Brown Sr. and Jettie Pegram Brown and his eight siblings, Ethel B. Coulter, Arthur Brown, Ola B. Johnson, Mary B. Oliver, Fred Brown, Barney Loyd, Roy Loyd and Nellie B. Levan.

John is survived by his wife Brenda, daughter Lynn B. Stapleton and son John P. Brown, III, his grandchildren, Daneille Brown, Katie Kingsmore and husband Andrew, Michael Stapleton and wife Leah, Jake Stapleton and wife Miranda, Emily Stapleton-Coughlin and husband Billy, and his great grandchildren Kollins Kingsmore, Koleman Kingsmore, Kolby Kingsmore, John Stapleton, Sophia Stapleton, Theodore Stapleton, Abigail Stapleton and his many nieces and nephews scattered across many states.

His dear friends are asked to be honorary pallbearers, Brock Dillard, Ben Wages, Hubert Sanders, Jan Gunter, Richard Duncan, Wayne Lawson, Don Sanders, Ray Goodman, Doug Lawing, Gary Griffin, Aubry Adams, Paul Davis, Rick Matthews, Leroy Worthy, Ed Heatherly, Bill Hickson, Tommy Rector, Thad Strom, Jack Rash, Tommy Sherbert, Jim Cunningham, Jerry Gossett, Franklin Fuller, J.L. Kirkley and Franklin Martin.

A celebration of John's life will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 13, 2024 in the First Baptist Church Sanctuary, 405 E. Main Street in Union. Reverends Robbie Stollger and Jeff Farmer will officiate.  Following the service, there will be a time of visitation and the family invites you for a luncheon in the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
