Mr. John Ray Petty, age 87, husband of Vera Cook Petty of 1011 East Main Street, Pacolet, passed away Thursday, January 2, 2014 at his home. Mr. Petty was born in Union, May 5, 1926, a son of the late Charlie L. Petty and Ada Brown Petty. He was a graduate of Pacolet High School and was a textile worker. Mr. Petty was a veteran of the US Navy having served in World War II and was a member of Pacolet United Methodist Church. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Surviving in addition to his wife of sixty-six years are two daughters: Ann P. Upton and husband Paul and Tammy P. Thompson and husband Rick; a son, Lantis Petty all of Pacolet; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren and special friends, Jimmy and Helen Cochran, Becky Pruitt and Bruce and June Pace all of Pacolet. Mr. Petty was predeceased by two sisters, Evie Allison and Sarah Johnson and two brothers, Walter Petty and Fred Petty. Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Tate Memorial Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Dennis Tessnier and Chaplain David Boyter. Burial will be in Pacolet United Methodist Church Cemetery with Military Honors. Visitation will be held 1:30-3:00 PM Saturday in the church prior to the service.
