Leila (Jones) Shirley

Mrs. Leila Jones Shirley, age 89, of 205 Lakeview Heights, Union, SC, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, at Ellen Sagar Nursing Center after a lingering illness.

Mrs. Shirley was born in Adamsburg, SC on May 2, 1935, a daughter of the late William Jennings Jones ad Bertha Susan Fowler Jones.  She was the loving wife of Freddie Shirley for 67 years.  She was a graduate of Jonesville High School and Robinson's Business College.  She was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, a former member and secretary of the Adult Choir, the Margie Morris Sunday School Class and the Frances Roberts Circle.  She also enjoyed working with children and youth at the church.  She was a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.  She began her career in insurance with Union Insurance and Trust Company and retired with a total of 50 plus years.

She is survived by her loving sister, Ethel J. Palmer of Union.  She was predeceased by five sisters, Ruth Montgomery, Doris Cooke, Edith Proctor, Johnnie West, Betty Grady, and one brother, William "Bill" Jones.  She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, whom she loved very much.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, August 15, 2024, at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Tom Tucker, Rev. Wayne Cooke, and Rev. Benny Green.  Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Jeffrey Cooke, Monty Cooke, Clint Goodson, Ronnie Jones, Kevin Montgomery, and Dennis Russell.  The following are asked to assemble at the church to form the Honorary Escort: Former and Active Members of the Margie Morris Sunday School Class, Former and Active Members of the Frances Roberts Circle and Former and Active Members of the Adult Choir.

Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM with service to follow at 2:00 PM.
