October 30, 2018 Mr. Leonard Hope Tipton, Jr, age 96, husband of Mildred Trammell Tipton of 304 Stutts Ave, Union, passed away Monday, October 29, 2018 at Union Medical Center. Mr. Tipton was born in Lockhart, SC August 11, 1922, a son of the late Leonard Hope Tipton, Sr., and Ada Allen Tipton. He attended Union High School and left to join the US Army and serve in World War II as a gunner. Mr. Tipton retired from Monarch Mill following forty-five years of service. He was an active member of Ottaray Baptist Church and attended Sardis United Methodist Church. Mr. Tipton served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher for Adult Men, Sunday School Superintendent, and was a member of the American Legion Post 22. Mr. Tipton also served by transporting veterans to appointments. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Mary Alice "Lucy" Jenkins of Union; a son, Leonard Stanley Tipton of Florence; three grandchildren: Kaye Jenkins of Fountain Inn, Johnny Jenkins and life partner Ed Sneed of Greenville and Stanley Tipton of Florence; a great-granddaughter: Jennifer Porter and husband David and their children, Troy and Ben Porter of Fountain Inn; a God-daughter, Mackenzie Palmer; a sister-in-law, Anna Lou Ivey Tipton and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Tipton was predeceased by a daughter, Cheryl Hope Tipton; a son, Robert Allen Tipton, two sisters; Virgie Stapleton and Nancy Brandt and two brothers, J.D. and Vernon Tipton. Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, November 1, 2018 at Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Stanley Tipton and Rev. Jeff Farmer. Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Yarborough, Paul Burgess, Mike Farr, Tony Harris, James Trammell, Lecil Smith, Ed Sneed, Tommy Lane, Calvin Smith, Roy Brackins, Brian Brackins, Allen Whitener and Darrel Palmer. Visitation will be held 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Thursday in the church prior to the service. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38106-1905 or to Shriner's Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Rd., Greenville, SC 29605-4277. The family is at the home, 304 Stutts Avenue, Union, SC 29379.
