Lloyd McLendon Sutherland of Spartanburg died Tuesday, May 9th, 2017 at his home. Mr. Sutherland, 67, was born in Union, SC on June 17, 1949. He was the son of the late Sara McLendon Sutherland and H. Lloyd Sutherland, DVM. Lloyd was a graduate of Union High School, class of 1967, a graduate of Auburn University where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy. Lloyd was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church of Union, and earned the Eagle Scout award. He was a devoted Auburn football fan and an avid fisherman. Lloyd served with the South Carolina Army National Guard for 21 years and retired as a major. He was the medical platoon leader of the Fourth Battalion 118thInfantry. Mr. Sutherland was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his sisters Sally (Bobby) Lyles of Columbia, Catherine (Eddie) Gaither of Greenwood and Jane Clyburn of Camden; two nieces and two nephews: Sara Catherine (Courtney) Corbett, Virginia (Charlie) Clyburn-Ipock, Sandlin (Danielle) Gaither and Cason Gaither. Also, very devoted first cousins, Gene Fant Reid and Scott Fant. The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to Lloyd's caregiver, Shannon Snow, also, to Norris Fowler for his leadership and assistance with Lloyd's service and to his family. Funeral services will be held at Holcombe Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, May 14, at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends immediately following the services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
