Mrs. Mardene T. Matthews, age 81, of 591 Philippi Church Rd., Union, widow of Thomas C. Matthews, passed away Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Mrs. Matthews was born in Lockhart, SC on August 5, 1936 a daughter of the late Roy F. Taylor and Ruby Brown Taylor. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School. Mrs. Matthews retired as a Supervisor from Milliken & Co.-Monarch Plant and had previously worked at Lockhart Mill. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Matthews had a tremendous love for her family, God and Gospel Music. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are one daughter, Leesa M. Frost and husband Dennis of Union; four grandchildren, Brian Hill and wife Brandee of Union, Melissa Risher and husband David of Easley, Tina Frost and Michelle Frost both of Union; eleven great-grandchildren; and two special nephews, Dennis Farr and Bobby Farr both of Union. She was predeceased by one sister, Eunice Farr and one brother Roy "Bud" Taylor. Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Jimmy Harper and Rev. Dale Welch. Burial will follow at Philippi Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Dennis Farr, Bobby Farr, Gonzale Childers, Mike Hill, Tim Hill, and James Garner. Visitation will be held 3:00 PM until 4:00 PM Tuesday prior to the services at the Church. The family would like to thank the Nurses and Staff of Gentiva Home Health and Spartanburg Regional Hospice House for their care of Mrs. Matthews. Memorials may be made to Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, 373 Wesley Chapel Road, Union, SC 29379 or Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303. The family is at the home of her daughter Leesa and Dennis Frost, 623 Philippi Church Rd., Union, SC 29379.
