July 16, 2014 Mrs. Margaret Riddle Gowan, age 94, formerly of 206 Hillcrest Drive, Union, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at Emeritus at Skylyn Place, Spartanburg. Mrs. Gowan was born in Spartanburg, SC August 6, 1919, a daughter of the late Faber Riddle and Milllie Smith Riddle. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from the Union County School District as Cafeteria Manager at Foster Park Elementary School. Mrs. Gowan was a member of First Baptist Church of Union where she had been both a Sunday School Teacher and a choir member for more than 40 years. As long as her health permitted, she enjoyed working with the youth and accompanied youth groups on mission trips from Ohio to the Bahamas. "Mama Nini" as she was affectionately known, greatly influenced the lives of many young adults whom she mentored. Mrs. Gowan was known as an accomplished cook, caterer and food connoisseur. Surviving are a daughter, Anita Moore and husband Bill of Union; two sons: Thomas E. "Tommy" Gowan, Jr. and wife Judy of Columbia and Randy "Chump" Gowan of Union; a sister, Braddie Rice of Spartanburg; four grandchildren: Trey Williams and wife Malisa, Heather Wyatt and husband Tommy, Michael Gowan and wife Alyssa and Jonathan Gowan and eight great-grandchildren: Logan, Jeremy, Hannah, Jon Parker, Robyn, Joshua, Lilly and Ava. Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, July 18, 2014 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Rick Pendleton and Rev. John Lee. Visitation will be held 10:00-11:00 AM Friday at Union Memorial Gardens prior to the service. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Youth Ministery, 405 East Main Street, Union, SC 29379 or to Medi Home Hospice, 101 S. Boyce Street, Union, SC 29379. The family is at the home of her daughter, Anita & Bill Moore, 203 Canterbury Rd., Union, SC 2979.
