Margaret Muriel Irene Cyr Hume

January 27, 1928 — March 11, 2018

Margaret Muriel Irene Cyr Hume - best known as Muriel or by her nickname, "Moe" - passed peacefully from this earth on March 11th, 2018, in Christiansburg, Virginia. She was 90 years old. The youngest of 4 daughters, Muriel was born in Lyons Falls, New York on January 27, 1928, to parents Marcial and Anna Blair Cyr. A 1945 graduate of Lyons Falls High School, she attended Oswego State Teachers College and later, Monroe School of Business in New York City, from which she graduated with honors in 1947. In June of 1949, she married her high school sweetheart, Donald "Don" Hume, in Lyons Falls, NY. They lived in Clinton, NY, for 2 years and Cazenovia, NY, for another year before making their way south to Atlanta, GA, and soon after, Birmingham, AL. During these years Muriel held a variety of jobs in the business world, from statistician to payroll clerk to bookkeeper to project estimator. Between 1956 and 1966, Muriel and Don welcomed 3 daughters and a son into their family, as the family relocated again from Birmingham to Hartsville, SC, and then in 1969 to Union, SC. After her husband's death in 1978, Muriel remained in Union with her family until 1991, when she re-located to St. Augustine, FL. Muriel returned to South Carolina 11 years later (Spartanburg, SC), where she resided until shortly before her death. Muriel was never idle. Throughout these years of relocation and caring for her growing family, she was involved with numerous religious, civic and educational organizations and causes. She was the church organist at St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Union, SC, for over 20 years. She was highly active in the Girl Scouts of America as a Piedmont Council Representative and past President. In 1979 she re-entered the business world with employment by The Torrington Company in Union, SC. As a senior buyer, she earned her official Certified Purchasing Manager accreditation in 1985 (and the nickname of "Purchasing Moe") along with other accolades before her retirement in 1991. Muriel loved to travel, and some of her fondest memories are of trips she made over the course of her lifetime to Europe, Hawaii, Canada, and visiting the many different states in which her 4 children have lived. Muriel had many talents that she honed and shared over the years; she was a published writer and poet; an artist and seamstress; a musician stock market enthusiast; a gardener and excellent cook; an avid golfer and loyal fan of Jordan Speith. These were all things that she enjoyed, superseded only by her love for God, her faith, and her family. While preceded in death by her spouse, Donald Hume, and one sister, Geraldine Cyr, Muriel is survived by her two sisters, Gladys Cyr Hartness of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Agnes Cyr Seifried of St. Augustine, FL. Also surviving are her 4 children and their spouses: Kathryn Hume Beck and husband James of Amherst, VA; Bonnie Hume Nichols and husband Everette of Fairlawn, VA; Donald Ernest Hume, Jr., and wife Vicki of Dayton, OH; and Cynthia Hume Kirschner and husband Richard of Beaumont, TX. She is also survived by her 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, to whom she was affectionately known as "Gramma Moolie" or "Gramma Moe": Amos Beck, Katherine Beck, Joseph Beck, Jesse Beck, Blair Nichols, Brittany Nichols Nelson, Jonathan Hume, Adam Hume, Ethan Hume, R. Evan Kirschner, Ryan Kirschner, Caroline Kirschner, Owen Kirschner; great-grandchildren Emma Nelson, John Nelson, and Findley Beck. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, March 24th, at 11:30 am, at Jesus Our Risen Savior Catholic Church in Spartanburg, SC. A graveside blessing and interment will follow at Union Memorial Gardens cemetery in Union, SC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Muriel's honor to the Homebound Ministry of Jesus Our Risen Savior Catholic Church, 2575 Reidville Rd, Spartanburg, SC.
