Margarette Crawford Greer

d. January 27, 2018

January 27, 2018 Mrs. Margarette Crawford Greer, age 94, of 505 Springdale Drive, widow of Paul Sarratt Greer, passed peacefully on January 26, 2018 at Heartland of Union. Born September 18, 1923, she was the daughter of Herrod Simpson Crawford and Ella Keisler Crawford. During her early childhood, Margarette suffered the unfortunate early death of her father, as well as their house fire, which prompted her mother to consider placing Margarette and some of her siblings in Thornwell Orphanage. Her days there were filled with strict discipline, academics, studying and memorizing Bible verses, and completing chores in the dining hall and infirmary. This is where she discovered her calling for caring for others. Margarette graduated from Thornwell High School and attended nursing school in Rock Hill. Upon her return to Union, she provided care for family and friends during their hospitalized illnesses. Margarette was always on call for expectant mothers and served as a midwife. For many years, she spent hours "Ubering" friends to church, hair appointments, and grocery stores. On Wednesdays, she enjoyed being with the ladies by taking them for afternoon joy rides, topped off with ice cream, before their Wednesday night prayer meeting. While home for the summer after eighth grade, Margarette met her husband Paul at a housewarming party, and it was love at first sight. Years passed and following his return from the war, they married on October 15, 1946. They had two children, Sharon and Paul II. Mrs. Greer was a homemaker who strived to meet the needs of her family, church, and the community. She supported her husband in his business, Greer's Shell Service Station. She was often seen riding in the fuel oil truck or wrecker and took great pride in helping to maintain the appearance of the business. Throughout her life, she enjoyed all things pink or white, and loved collecting pink glass and teapots. She made many special memories with family at their beach home, Sky's the Limit, at Surfside Beach. Mrs. Greer was an active member of Sardis United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and served on various committees such as the Official Board. She influenced the lives of many children teaching them Bible stories and songs to instill in them a love for Jesus Christ. Mrs. Greer was a Christian servant, unselfishly serving in many roles in her hometown. She spent countless hours as an active volunteer with organizations such as the Union County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Board, the Bloodmobile, poll manager during all elections, a Cub Scout den mother, and Cowbells, the cattle-owners' wives' association. The organization most close and dear to her heart was Meals on Wheels, where she served faithfully for twenty-seven years. Even as a resident of Heartland Assisted Living, she continued to volunteer for this cause, selling cookbooks and helping with fundraising events. Mrs. Greer was unique. She was a humble, ordinary woman who was an extraordinary worker for the Kingdom of God. Her smile, compassion, and words of encouragement touched the lives of everyone who knew her. She always told her family, "Do your best and be your best. Always remember who you are." She never spoke an unkind word and always saw the best in everyone. Affectionately known to many as "MaMa", she will be missed by all. Her legacy will live on. Surviving are one daughter, Sharon Greer Smith (Ray W. Wilson) of Charleston; one son, Paul S. Greer, II and wife Karen of Union; four grandchildren, Troy Douglas Smith of Charleston, Buffie Smith Copeland and husband Jeff of Charleston, Paul Sarratt Greer, III of Columbia, and Patrick Sterling Greer of Orlando, Fl; five great-grandchildren, Taylor Elizabeth Smith, Troy Douglas Smith, II, Matthew Alexander Smith, Lane Greer Copeland, and Seth Crawford Copeland all of Charleston; one sister-in-law, Linda H.
