December 12, 2017 Mrs. Mary Cody Phillips, age 89, of 311 Bruce O. Wilson Rd., Union, widow of Arthur Lynn Phillips, passed away Monday, December 12, 2017 at White Oak at North Grove. Mrs. Phillips was born November 29, 1928 in Union, SC a daughter of the late John J. Cody, Sr. and Janie N. Cody. She was a graduate of Union High School. Mrs. Phillips and her husband founded Phillips Hosiery Mill and she had previously worked at United Merchants as a Cost Accountant. Later in life, Mrs. Phillips helped her son, Lynn at his restaurant Leonard's of Buffalo. She was a member of Greater Union Church and had previously volunteered with Meals on Wheel of Union. Surviving are one son, Charles M. "Mac" Phillips and wife Susan of Fletcher, NC; two daughters, Kay P. Smith and husband Rickey of Columbia, SC and Sally Phillips Rushing of Roswell, GA; one daughter-in-law, Arana C. Coleman; five grandchildren, Jeffrey L. Phillips of Spartanburg, Alan C. Smith of Gaffney, Hannah M. Smith of Columbia, Sophia Phillips Rushing of Roswell, GA and Riley Phillips Rushing of Roswell, GA; two sisters, Jeanette C. Huggins of Marietta, GA and Sarah C. Crocker of Johnston, SC; and one brother, Baxter W. Cody. She was predeceased by one son, John Lynn Phillips; one grandson, Austen Phillips; one sister Ella Kirby; and five brothers, John J. Cody, Jr., Jeter Cody, Sr., Thomas Cody, Frank Cody, and Charles Cody. Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, December 15, 2017 at Greater Union Church conducted by the Rev. Roger Estes. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mary Cody Phillips exemplified loyalty, service, selflessness, and courage. She modeled how to serve, give, love, and act with few words to explain. Those fortunate enough to know her remember a fierce, unapologetic walk of faith. As we gather to celebrate her life on Friday, December 15 we look forward to stories of how her cakes, cookies, casseroles, and passion for living are remembered. Active pallbearers will be Don Cody, Andrew Burgess, Jonathan Burgess, Jeremiah Smoak, Thomas Gibson, Billy Medford, Mike Phillips, and Billy Greene. The Thomas Gibson Adult Sunday School Class of Greater Union Church is asked to sit in a group and form the honorary escort. Visitation will be held from 1:30 until 3:00 PM prior to the services at the Church. Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 951, Union, SC 29379 or to Greater Union Church-Camp Eagle Ridge, 321 Bruce O. Wilson Rd., Union, SC 29379. The family is at their respective homes.
