Mr. Matthew John "Matt" McKenzie, age 45, husband of Sara Brown McKenzie of 104 Stonecrest Ct., Pacolet, passed away Sunday, December 28, 2014 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Mr. McKenzie was born in Union, on December 16, 1969 a son of Jane Zuchowski McKenzie of Union and the late Kenneth McKenzie. He was a 1988 graduate of Union High School, a 1993 graduate of Lander University, and a 1995 graduate of Converse College where he earned his Master's degree. Mr. McKenzie was employed with the Union County School District, as a teacher at Union County High School. He had previously taught at Foster Park Elementary and Jonesville Elementary schools. He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. Mr. McKenzie was an avid outdoorsman and was a member of Cantrell Rod and Gun Club. Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two daughters, Madeline Sara Norton and Hannah Christin Norton of the home; a brother, Keith McKenzie and wife Margaret of York; a niece Maranda McKenzie of York; and his beloved English Setter, Dash. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 31, 2014 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Sal Barone, Rev. Norman Band, and Father Michael McCafferty. The Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 5:00 PM Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel. Visitation will follow from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. The following are asked to serve as active pallbearers, Paul "Hamp" Jeter, Chris Sanders, Andy Youngblood, Don Hyder, Charlie Kelly, and Mark Cathcart. The faculty and staff of Union County High School are asked to serve as the honorary escort. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Claude Woollen, Dr. Asim Pati, and special nurses, Ashley Franklin, Lisa Kirby, Asha Desi, Phyllis Bates, and Jennifer Sizemore for the professional yet kind and compassionate care extended to Matt during his illness. Memorials may be made to the Union County Humane Society, 218 N. Pinckney St., Union, SC 29379 or Leukemia and Lymphoma Society South Carolina Chapter, 107 Westpark Blvd, Suite 150, Columbia, SC 29210. The family is at the home 104 Stonecrest Ct., Pacolet and at the home of his mother, Jane McKenzie, 115 Hidden Hill Rd., Union.
