Mike Scales

Rev. Guy Michael Scales, age 62, husband of Susan Little Scales, passed away Monday, December 28, 2020 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Rev. Scales was born December 21, 1958, the son of the late Guy Wilbur Scales and Lena Vinson Scales of Jonesville, SC.  He was a graduate of Union High School, Spartanburg Methodist College and Haywood Technical College. He was married to Susan Little Scales for 38 years.  His passion for the outdoors shone in his career with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, his advocacy for natural resources through leadership roles on multiple boards and agencies, and his work as a farmer.  Most recently, he entered ministry and served as the pastor of Whitmire and Carlisle United Methodist Churches.  Mike loved being around people and never knew a stranger – only someone he just hadn't met yet. He was known for his strong work ethic, his ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, and for his outstanding storytelling skills. His family and friends will remember him for his love of the Lord, his family, his community, and the outdoors – all of which he shared generously throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Little Scales, daughter, Rev. Emily Scales Sutton and her husband Marc Sutton of Rock Hill, SC; his son, Matthew Newell Scales and his wife Dr. Kristi Ford Scales of Jonesville, SC; his grandchildren Wylie Matthew Scales, Isabella Kaye Sutton, James Florence Scales, Alexandra Rogan Sutton and Wilbur Lee Scales.

Graveside Services will be held at 3:30 PM Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Reverend Glenn Ribelin presiding.

Active pallbearers will be Brad Horne, Billy McKinney, Ricky McKinney, & Kenneth Horne.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, General Fund, 1622 Kelly Road, Union, SC 29379, or Epworth Children's Home.
