March 14, 2017 Mrs. Nancy Lavinia Lewis Wilburn, age 89, of 211 Park Dr., Union, widow of Jack Thomas Wilburn, passed away Monday, March 13, 2017 at her home. Mrs. Wilburn was born on December 14, 1927 in Charleston, SC a daughter of the late Col. Marion Smith Lewis and Nancy McLawhorn Lewis. She graduated from Memminger High School in Charleston and attended the College of Charleston. She earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from Winthrop University, a B.S. in Music with an emphasis on Pipe Organ and Music Education, and a Master of Arts in Teaching respectively. Mrs. Wilburn's teaching career began in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and continued in Spartanburg, Orangeburg, and Union, South Carolina, with the majority spent at Union Academy and Foster Park Elementary School. She retired after 35 years as an elementary and music educator. Mrs. Wilburn was a member of First Baptist Church of Union, Third Monday Book Club, Union Music Club, Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International, Friends of the Union County Carnegie Library, Union County Arts Council and Union County Historical Society. In addition to her many interest, her life was filled with music and she had an avid love of classical music and the pipe organ. She was the organist at Second Presbyterian Church in Union for 16 years. Surviving are two daughters, Nancy Wilburn Kennedy and her husband Leroy of Union and Linda Wilburn Weber of Summerville, SC; three grandchildren, Patrick Wilburn Kennedy of Union; Matthew McLawhorn Kennedy and his wife Elizabeth of Memphis, TN and Carolina Koran Weber of Summerville, SC; three sisters, Lou Lewis Prongay of Winston Salem, NC, Ann Lewis Austin of Cambridge, MA and Marion Lewis King of Lakewood, CO; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 17, 2017 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. David Bauknight and Rev. Ron Davis. Burial will follow in Lower Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
