Mr. Paul Heyward Burgess, Jr., age 78, husband of Phyllis Kelly Burgess of 939 Sardis Rd., Union, passed away after an extended illness, Thursday, September 28, 2023 at his home surrounded by his family.
Mr. Burgess was born January 29, 1945, in Union, a son of the late Paul H. Burgess, Sr. and Rose Finger Burgess. He was a graduate of Union High School, Newberry College, the University of South Carolina and received a horticultural degree from Spartanburg Technical College. Mr. Burgess retired as Director of Union County Disabilities and Special Needs, where he was instrumental in the creation of the Greenhouse. Prior to working in Union, he was previously employed with Whitten Center. Mr. Burgess "Bubba" was an avid hunter, fisherman, and gardener as well as a loving husband, father, grandfather and man of God. He was an active member of Sardis Methodist Church and the Perry Haney Sunday School Class.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Elizabeth Canada and husband Danny of Union; a son, Paul H. Burgess, III of Union; a sister-in-law, Jean Whitener of Gainesville, GA; a special family member Frances Vaughan of Union; four grandchildren, Alysa B. Lee and husband Kevin; Jessica B. Greene and husband Brandon, Lily Canada, and Jayda Canada; and four great-grandchildren, Kagen Burgess Taylor, Arlan Greene, Bryson Lee, and Rose Lee. Mr. Burgess was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at Sardis Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Jeff Farmer. Visitation will be held from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM prior to the services at the Church.
The family would like to extend a special "Thank You" to Spartanburg Regional Hospice and nurse Kaci Bright for their love and care of Mr. Burgess during his illness.
