Robert G. Mcalpine, Sr.

November 30, 1921 — May 9, 2024

Gainsville, FL

In loving memory of Robert G. McAlpine Sr., a beloved patriarch, Navy veteran, and dedicated Forest Service employee, who peacefully passed away May 9, 2024, at the age of 102. He leaves behind a legacy of courage, service, and unwavering kindness. Born November 30, 1921 in Union South Carolina, Bob lived a remarkable life filled with adventures and purpose. At the dawn of World War II, he bravely answered his country's call, serving as a plank owner on the USS The Sullivans (DD537) in the United States Navy with honor and distinction. His commitment to duty and sacrifice during those tumultuous times exemplified the greatest qualities of his generation. Following the war, Bob continued his commitment to service by joining the U.S.D.A. Forest Service, where he applied his skills and dedication to research and preservation of our natural resources. His work in conservation and forestry left an indelible mark on the landscapes he cherished. Outside of his professional endeavors, Bob found solace and joy in the great outdoors. An avid fisherman and camper, he found peace and serenity in nature's embrace. His love for the wilderness was matched only by his talent for woodworking, where he worked with neighborhood children to make toys or birdhouses and engage in experiences that will be treasured for generations to come. Perhaps one of Bob's greatest joys came from his involvement in his community and church. Always willing to lend a helping hand, he selflessly dedicated his time and energy to making the world a better place through the Alachua General Hospital Auxiliary and his fellow handymen, nicknamed the BVD's. His compassion, humility, and unwavering faith served as a beacon of light to all who knew him. Preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Lorena Cate McAlpine, Bob will be fondly remembered by his loving family and countless friends for his gentle spirit, infectious laughter, and timeless wisdom. He is survived by his three children, Mary Ellen McAlpine, Robert G McAlpine, Jr (Cathy) and Martha M. Taylor (Steve), 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Though he may have left this world, his legacy of service, integrity, and love will continue to inspire us all. In honoring Bob's life, let us strive to embody the values he held dear — courage, kindness, and a deep reverence for the beauty of nature. May his memory be a blessing and may he rest in eternal peace. A memorial service will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church, 3146 NW 13th Street, Gainesville FL on June 15, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon.
