Mr. Ronald Steve "Goober" Garner, age 73, husband of Sandra Haile Garner, of 305 Drugstore St., Union, passed away, Friday, January 31, 2025 at his home.
Mr. Garner was born April 24, 1951 in Woodruff, a son of the late Wallace Garner and Evelyn Medlock Garner. He was a graduate of Union High School and Newberry College. Mr. Garner retired from Cone Mill—Carlisle Finishing Plant. He was a member of Lakeside Baptist Church. Mr. Garner was an avid softball player, an umpire for Little League and Dixie Youth Baseball. He was a member of the Union High School Hall of Fame and the Union County Youth Baseball Hall of Fame.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 31 years are a son, Ronald Clay Garner and wife Kieran of Texas; a step-daughter, Kelly Erwin Tucker and husband Bobby of Buffalo; a step-son, Michael Erwin and wife Brandy of Spartanburg; two sisters, Brenda Henderson and Freddie Foster both of Union; ten grandchildren, Skylar Garner (Xavier), Hayden Garner, Ansleigh Erwin, Lanie Tucker, Jackson Erwin, Camden Erwin, Gavin Jordan, Gabriel Jordan, Jakob Tucker and Jasper Garner; three great-grandchildren, Ariella Gregory, River Johnson and Amelia Johnson; and his special extended family, Davina Sanford (Justin), Addy Hammond, Lucas Hammond, Katy Max Hammond, Finn Rogers, and Lola Howell. He was predeceased by a grandson, Brayden Erwin, a brother Wayne "Cooter" Garner, and a sister, Patsy Garner.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Tuesday, February 4, 2025 at Lakeside Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Scott Cobb. Burial will follow at Rosemont Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Gavin Jordan, Gabriel Jordan, Hayden Garner, Jackson Erwin, Camden Erwin, and Jakob Tucker. Mr. Garner's softball friends and umpires are asked to sit in a group and form the honorary escort.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Monday evening at Lakeside Baptist Church.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff, especially Amber Gardin, for their love and care of Mr. Garner during his illness.
