April 27, 2016 Mrs. Sara Jo Balchin Nickles, age 94, of 442 Mt. Tabor Church Rd., Union, widow of William Wallace Nickles, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at her home. Mrs. Nickles was born in Elbert Co., GA, November 12, 1921, a daughter of the late William Edgar and Jewel Frost Balchin. She was a graduate of the Nancy Hart Memorial High School, attended Georgia State College for Women and later graduated Greenwood College of Commerce. Mrs. Nickles worked at the Connie Maxwell Children's Home for 26 years and thoroughly enjoyed being involved with the children. She served in many ways, mostly as a cottage mother until she retired. She was an active member of Philippi Baptist Church. Mrs. Nickles served her church as a devoted prayer warrior and Sunday School teacher. Surviving are a daughter, Jewel Gregory and husband Steve; three sisters, Billie Wilson, Doris Ashley and Flonnie Shaw and husband Tony; a special daughter, Harriett Locklair and husband William. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren are Nick Gregory and wife Nicole and their children, Makayla, Hailey and Gavin, and Andrea Gregory and her children, Baylee and Grant Butler and Drake Roberts and a special niece, Brenda Brown. Mrs. Nickles was predeceased by a sister, Maxie McDonald and a brother, George Balchin. Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Philippi Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale and Mr. Tony Shaw. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Ron Ashley, Mickey Balchin, Roger McCoig, William Locklair, Ronnie Crocker and Glenn Ivey. The following are asked to serve as the honorary escort, members of the Adult III Sunday School class, Jerry Callahan, Butch Carter, Teresa Means, Trenisha Dennis and Dot Gibson. Visitation will be held from 2:00 until 3:00 PM Saturday at the church prior to the services.
