Susan Steffen Neal, 66, of Union, South Carolina, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, surrounded by her family.
Susan was born January 6, 1960, in Illinois, to Raymond and Mary Steffen. The daughter of a military family, she spent her childhood in Hawaii, Iowa, and Nebraska before settling in South Carolina. She graduated from Union High School in 1978 and later earned her bachelor’s degree from Lander College.
She married Tony Neal, her devoted husband of 43 years, and together they made their home on Wesley Chapel Road near Philippi Baptist Church, where she was a member. For more than 40 years, their home was a constant gathering place for family and a place filled with countless memories.
Susan worked throughout her life at Sears, Greenleaf, Wallace Thomson Hospital, and Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where she retired as a maintenance coordinator in December 2025.
Family was at the center of Susan’s life. She especially treasured time with her husband, children and her three grandsons. Whether on family vacations, gathered around the table, or simply spending time together at home, she found her greatest joy in being with them.
Susan also enjoyed settling in with her favorite TV shows, cheering on Kansas City football, and proudly following Taylor Swift through every era. She valued her friendships deeply, especially her more than 50-year friendship with Sherry (Cheryl) Canupp Boulware.
She is survived by her husband, Tony Neal, of the home; her son, Ryan Neal, his wife, Karen, and their sons, Jackson, Lincoln, and Harrison, of Spartanburg, South Carolina; and her daughter, Lisa Neal, of Greenville, South Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Mary Steffen, and her sister, Candice Steffen.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Philippi Baptist Church, 327 Philippi Church Rd, Union, SC 29379, with the funeral service to follow at 2:00.
The family is at the home, 106 Wesley Chapel Road, Union, SC 29379.
