William T. Beaty, Ii

Mr. William Thomas Beaty, II, age 91, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2014 at his home in Union, SC. Mr. Beaty was born in Union, June 21, 1923 the son of the late William Norman Beaty and Annie Janette Gore. He was the younger brother of three sisters, Cornelia (Neely) Meng Culp Beaty and her twin, Mary Norman Beaty Haynes, and Frances Whitmire Beaty Weeks. Mr. Beaty attended Union public schools, and was a graduate of Union High School. He attended and was graduated from the University of South Carolina, Wofford College, Tulane University, Columbia University, The New York School of Social Work and the Sorbonne of Paris. Mr. Beaty served six years in the US Army during WWII; mostly in Belgium, Germany and France. He was active for many years with the World Federation for Mental Health in various parts of the world. It is well known that he could read, speak and write in five languages including English, French, Italian, Spanish and German. Mr. Beaty was for many years Executive Director of the Ittleson Foundation and also the Van Ameringen Foundation, both located in New York City and operating throughout the world. Historical preservation was also one of his great interests. Mr. Beaty was an Honorary Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Public Health Association and many other professionally related bodies. He was the partial author of a biography of Clifford W. Beers, the founder in 1909 of the modern mental hygiene movement in America and abroad. Mr. Beaty retired after 45 years to his native Union, SC, occupying the ancestral home built by his great-grandfather in 1847. Private graveside services were held at Mt.
