In addition to his wife of 76 years, Betty, Willie is survived by his daughter, Ginger Keisler (Billy), granddaughter, Courtney Petty (Allen), four great grandchildren, Jessica Gibson (Matt), Arron Petty ((Krislyn), Garrett Williams (Aubrey Broadway) and Patrick Williams (Brooklyn). Mr. Young also leaves behind a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, and his son, Jerry Dean Young.
Willie was a devoted and loving husband to Betty for 76 years and held his family that they built together second only to God. His family was at the center of his life and everything he did was for them. He was especially close with his great grandsons, Garrett and Patrick Williams. Willie treated everyone he knew as family and cared for others as an act of true discipleship.
Willie was a member of Unity United Methodist Church. He served as the Superintendent of Sunday School and was on the church board for many years. He was a member of the Union Masonic Lodge #75 and a member of Minute Men Rescue of Union County. His community meant a lot to him and he was mindful of the well-being of his friends and neighbors.
Willie started his career at Eagle Grocery at 18 years old. He later became a printer at Carlisle Finishing Plant and Cone Mills, where he later retired as a supervisor. After retirement, he went in to the workforce as a security guard at Webb Forging. Willie's true work interests was in grocery, leading him to return to that industry as the store manager at the Fresh Air Galaxy. He mentored many in the young community as they started their careers.
Willie and Betty were affectionately known as Box Car Willie and Mama B to their local CB friends. As the owner of Young's Variety Pack, he sold CB supplies and helped locals with estate sales. His helpful nature extended beyond state lines. Willie was a valuable member of the Apple Hill Orchards fried pie team at the NC Apple Festival.
Willie was devoted to his faith, family and friends. He possessed a servant's heart and was an example for so many to live by. He is surely rejoicing as he talks with Jesus and catches up with those who joyfully welcomed him into Heaven.
A private memorial was held by the family on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.
