Winnie Belle Sanders

January 17, 2020 Major (Ret.) Winnie Belle Sanders, age 103 formerly of Lenoir, NC, passed away Sunday, January 12, 2020 at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville. Miss Sanders was born in Union, November 10, 1916, a daughter of the late Fred and Lula Ogles Sanders. She was a graduate of Union High School, Cecil's Business College and received her Nursing degree from Spartanburg General Hospital. Miss Sanders joined the United States Army in 1941 and served as a nurse until 1945. She re-entered service joining the United States Air Force Nurses Corps in 1949 and retired as a flight nurse in 1966. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star chapter #79 and was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Union. Miss Sanders was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is survived by a niece, Nadine Glenn of Houston, MO and two great-nephews, Brian Libberton of Houston, MO and Robert Libberton of Glendale, AZ. Miss Sanders was predeceased by two brothers, Fred E. Sanders and his wife Ana Maria and Harry W. Sanders. She was also predeceased by her best-friend since nursing school and sister-in-law, Lucille Sanders. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, January 21, 2020, at Rosemont Cemetery conducted by Rev. Robbie Stollger.
