Wayne was born to Marvin and Nora Lancaster Springs, September 21, 1938, in the Sulphur Springs community. Wayne had 4 siblings: Dale (Mildred) Springs (both deceased), Patricia Lawson, Buffalo, SC, Linda (Dan) Scott, Simpsonville, SC, and Judy Garner, Union, SC.
Wayne attended Knott Hill, a one room schoolhouse, in Sulphur Springs and graduated from Jonesville High School in 1956. He was known to his friends as “Legs”.
In August 1959, he married Connie Baldwin. They had 3 daughters: Cheri (David) Harkins, Cleveland, TN, Angie (Mike) Stalnaker, Union, SC, and Crystal (Travis) Runion, Greer, SC. These unions provided nine grandchildren: Seth (Julia) Harkins, Rachel (Carter) Mackie, Ashley (Steven) Blackwell, Caleb (Mary Frances), AnnaLeigh, Abbey (Joseph), Cora, Josh, and Brody Runion. There are 6 great grands: Adam, Merritt, and Lawson Harkins, Harper and Hattie Blackwell and Annie Runion.
He was employed with Cone Mills for 48 years spending 45 of those years driving an 18-wheeler where he was known as Springtime. He drove over 4 million miles receiving many safe driving awards.
Wayne loved his family and spending time with them. He also loved his yard and spent many hours keeping it manicured. He served as a deacon and on many committees at Browns Creek and Mon-Aetna Baptist Churches. He loved driving the bus for senior, youth and children’s trips. He was an elected member of the Brown’s Creek Water Shed District Board.
Wayne joined hands with Jesus in heaven on Saturday, January 8, 2022. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 14th at Mon-Aetna Baptist, 1431 Lockhart Hwy., Union, SC from 5:30 TO 7:00 PM. A Celebration of Wayne’s Life will be held at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church on Saturday, January 15th at 1:00 PM. Service will be conducted by Mike Stalnaker, David Harkins, Travis Runion, Rev. Benny Green, and Rev. Jesse Pendergrass. Burial will be at Union Memorial Gardens. The Family request that those in attendance please follow COVID-19 Guidelines by wearing mask and social distancing. Memorials may be made to Mon-Aetna Church designated to the International Mission Board.
Pallbearers are Seth Harkins, Carter Mackie, Steven Blackwell, Caleb, Josh, and Brody Runion, and Joseph Todd. Wayne’s Sunday School will sit as a group.
