Mrs. Annie Ruth Whitaker Austin, age 87, formerly of Toluca St., Union, widow of Dexter Austin, passed away, Saturday, October 9, 2021 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Center.
Mrs. Austin was born August 13, 1934 in Lancaster, a daughter of the late Judson Whitaker and Pearlie Mae Bowers Whitaker. She was a graduate of Greenwood High School and USC Union. Mrs. Austin retired from Winn Dixie after over 40 years, where she managed the Health and Beauty Department. She worked at Bantam Chef part-time after her retirement. Mrs. Austin was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she was on the Hostess Committee for many years, she was a member of the Kat Williams Sunday School Class and later the Judy Graham Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Eastern Star for many years and was involved with Relay for Life of Union.
Surviving are two sons, David Austin and wife Donna of Union and Rev. Thomas Austin and wife Debra of Okeechobee, FL; four grandchildren, Russell Austin and wife Kacey, Heidi Mortensen and husband Evan, Marla Austin, and Rev. Andrew Austin and wife Courtney; four great-grandchildren, Joshua Austin, Adalyn Austin, Kayleigh Austin, and Aubree Kate Austin; a sister, Dorothy Sims of Fort Mill; and a nephew, Terry Sims of Fort Mill. She was predeceased by a sister, Pearl Tuten and a nephew, Roger Tuten.
Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Thomas Austin and Rev. Andrew Austin.
Active pallbearers will be Don Ray Shetley, Brown Fant, Jason Spencer, Evan Mortensen, Russell Austin, and Tim Hollingsworth. The following are asked to serve as the honorary escort, Bobby and Brenda Fleming, Annette and Calvin Walker, Beth and Mike Lancaster, Tommy and Rachel McManus, Carol Parrish, Jenny Gunter, and Debbie Eaves.
The family will receive friends immediately following the services at the cemetery.
