Mrs. Carolyn Suzette Mathis Northern, age 71 of 106 Pine Knoll Rd., Union, passed away Friday, May 19, 2023 at her home.
Mrs. Northern was born in Union, September 3, 1951, a daughter of the late Louie Mose Mathis and Mary Virginia Mobley Mathis. She was a graduate of Union High School and Spartanburg Technical College. Mrs. Northern retired from the SC Dept. Corrections, Tyger River Facility as an Assistant Director of Food Services where she also served as a “mentor” to people she met there. She had previously worked as a supervisor with United Merchants and as HR Manager with Ameritex in Greer.
Mrs. Northern was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and attended Covenant Baptist Church. Lovingly known as “Mama Sue”, she enjoyed cooking, shopping, and spending time with her family.
Surviving are two daughter, Beth Weltman and husband Todd, and Misty Rhinehart and husband “Lil’ Man”; two sons, Joey Northern and wife Rita and Matthew Northern all of Union; a sister, Martha Loraine Yarbrough of Union; seven grandchildren: Lee Moss and wife Gina, Dustin Weltman, Blake Northern, Maleah Adams, Jayna Rhinehart, Parker Northern, and Chandler Northern; and six great-grandchildren, Aubrey Moss, Luke Moss, Ben Weltman, Amzie Weltman, Layton Crocker and Nolan Hayes. She is also survived by special friends, Jacquelyn and Richard Worthy of Whitmire, Lynn and Delene Miller of Pacolet, and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Northern was predeceased by a brother-in-law, David Yarbrough and a brother, Thomas Cary Mathis.
Funeral services will be held at 4:00 PM, Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at Covenant Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Brad Goodale. Burial will follow at Padgett’s Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with the processional being led by her grandson, Deputy Chandler Northern. Visitation will be held from 3:00 until 4:00 PM Tuesday at the church prior to the services.
Active pallbearers will be Lee Moss, Dustin Weltman, Blake Northern, Kelvin Eison, Parker Northern and Vidal Jones.
