Charles JD Gaines

           Mr. Charles “J.D.” Gaines, age 99, of 130 Gregory St. Union, widower of Margaret McAbee Gaines, went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, September 13, 2023.

            Mr. Gaines was born in Laurens Co., September 17, 1923, a son of the late Lester Toney and Ethel Gaines Toney and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He retired from the US Postal Service after 28 years and was a veteran of the US Army having served in WWII. Mr. Gaines was a member of Morningside Baptist Church since 1961. He served as a Deacon, Sunday School Director, Sunday School Teacher, and Training Union Director. Mr. Gaines also served on various committees within the church.

            Surviving are two daughters, Melinda Gaines of Union, and Mary Payne and husband Jonathan of Greenwood; and a son, Tim Gaines and wife Tina of Union. He is also survived by grandchildren, David Payne and wife Lisa, Natalie Cloninger and husband Franklin, Rielly Gaines and Matthew Carter and wife Jessica; and great-grandchildren, Andrew, Jack, Mary Kate, Lottie and Emma.

            A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, September 15, 2023, at Morningside Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Scott. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Union Memorial Gardens.

            Visitation will be from 1:00 until 2:00 PM Friday at the church prior to the services.

            The family will be at the home of his son, Tim and Tina Gaines, 121 Park Dr., Union.
