Mr. Garland Aubrey Vaughn, 96, of Union passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2021, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Mr. Vaughn was married for fifty-four years to his late wife Margaret W. Vaughn. A son of the late Gideon A. and Mary H. Vaughn, he was a native of Greensboro, North Carolina.
Mr. Vaughn is survived by his son Dr. G. Thomas Vaughn and his wife, Dr. JoLynn Prochaska Vaughn of Myrtle Beach. Other survivors include a brother Richard Vaughn of Greensboro, N.C. Mr. Vaughn is also survived by a number of beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers Bernard, Howard, Jack, and Albert, and his sister Mary Frances Cockman.
He attended Bessemer High School in Greensboro, N.C. Mr. Vaughn served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Weeden. Upon discharge from the Navy, he began working for Cone Mills and later transferred to the Carlisle Plant, where he worked until his retirement. Mr. Vaughn was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and served faithfully on the baptismal committee for many years. He was honored by Tabernacle in 2018 at Father of the Year. Mr. Vaughn was known to be a “social butterfly” during retirement making many beloved friends in the Union community.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, July 9, 2021 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Dr. Tommy Vaughn.
The family will receive friends at the graveside immediately following the service.
Active pallbearers will be Ben M. Jolly, Lynn Wilkins, Rick Wilkins, Stu Hamblin, Johnny Price, and Sam White.
The family will be at the home of his niece, Frances Jolly, 418 Mount Vernon Road, Union. Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church, 915 S. Pinckney Street, Union, S.C. 29379.
