Gladys Evelyn Hyler Bryan, wife of the late J.C. Bryan, Jr. and formerly of Union, passed away on October 25th, 2023. She had been a resident of Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community in Laurens, S.C. since May 2018.
A native of Abingdon, Virginia, she was a 1955 graduate of Columbia International University with a B.A. degree in Biblical Education. She also did graduate work at USC, Winthrop and Converse and was state certified in English, secondary guidance and psychology. She was also a certified Church Education Director. Her teaching and missionary career of 44 years included public school Bible teacher, secondary English at Lockhart High School, and 5th grade Language Arts at Monarch Elementary where she was recognized as the state “Distinguished Reading Teacher”.
As a longtime member of Union First Baptist she provided leadership for the Sunday School, WMU, VBS, Senior Adults and was a choir member. She served on the Associational level as the WMU and Sunday School Director for the county. After retiring from Union County Schools, she served for 10 years as Ministry Coordinator for the Union County Baptist Association, helping to organize and lead weekly Bible studies and activities in over six multi-housing locations. On the state level she served as resident missionary at Camp Lavida, and on the Executive Board of the South Carolina Baptist Convention. In 1977, Gladys and J.C. were appointed mission consultants by the North American Mission Board. An additional highlight for Gladys was a mission trip to Cuba in 2008.
She is survived by a son: Rev. Dr. Chris Bryan and his wife Donna Rivers Bryan; of Simpsonville, S.C. three grandchildren: Katie Bryan Pongpa and husband, Game of Sanpatong, Thailand; Jordan Bryan and wife, Chelsa of Simpsonville, S.C. and Carrie Bryan of Louisville, Kentucky; six great grandchildren: Prinna Elizabeth Ponga, Levi Grienggri Ponga, Evelynn Beth Bryan, Jones Conrad Bryan, Nora Meadows Bryan, and Scarlett Wren Bryan; also surviving is a sister Ruth Hyler Price of Virginia, and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel of First Baptist Church of Union, S.C., located at 405 E. Main Street. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
