Mrs. Gloria Lowe Northern, age 91, of Gibert St., Union, widow of Beauford “Ray” Northern, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, January 25, 2024.
Mrs. Northern was born in Greenville, August 15, 1932, a daughter of the late Fred and Marie Brooks Lowe. She was a graduate of Union High School and had worked well into her eighties at Charlie’s Auto Sales. She had previously worked in accounting for Milliken and was also very active in the businesses she and her husband Ray owned and operated throughout the years.
She was a faithful, founding member of Covenant Baptist Church where she served as Treasurer and WMU Treasurer. She served on the Senior Committee and the Hospitality Committee. She enjoyed being part of the team that cooked for the Union Rotary Club meetings and was always available to help her church in any way.
Mrs. Northern was very active in her community, serving on various committees and participating in various clubs. She was President of the American Legion Auxiliary, a member of the Union Veterans Day Parade Committee and had served on the American Red Cross Board. She also participated in the activities her children were involved in, including being a Girl Scout leader and a Boy Scout den mother. Throughout her life, she remained busy with the things that were important to her; her Lord, her church and her family.
Surviving are a daughter, Marisa N. Walker and husband Brian “Charlie” of Union; seven grandchildren, Beth Weltman, Joey Northern, Misty Rhinehart, Brandi Clayton, Matthew Northern, Chad Hooper and Heath Walker; thirteen great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Thomas Leroy “Tommy” Northern and a brother, Larry Lowe.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, January 28, 2024 at Covenant Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Wayne Cook and Rev. Scott Cobb. Visitation will be held from 2:00 until 3:00 PM Sunday at the church prior to the services.
The procession will be led by her great-grandson, Chandler Northern to Union Memorial Gardens for burial.
Active pallbearers will be Blake Northern, Lee Moss, Dustin Weltman, Garrison Hooper, Jordan Hooper and Heath Walker.
Members of the American Legion Auxiliary, the American Legion, and friends from the Horseshoe are asked to sit in a group.
In lieu of flowers, the family asked that memorials be made to Covenant Baptist Church, Debt Reduction Fund, PO Box 10, Union, SC 29379.
