September 11, 1952 ~ November 8, 2022 (age 70) 70 Years Old

Joan Vinson Hickman Obituary

            Mrs. Joan Vinson Sprouse Hickman, of Union, went home to be with the Lord on November 8, 2022, surrounded by her family at home.

            She was born on September 11,1952 to the late Mattie Pearl White Vinson and Thomas Ansel Vinson in Woodruff, SC.  She graduated from Jonesville High School in 1970, and then from USC-Upstate Mary Black School of Nursing in 1988. She started her career at Wallace Thompson Hospital and advanced to administrative nursing. Her work over 35 years included Director of Home Health and Hospice in Union County, culminating in her position with the South Carolina as Department of Health and Environmental Control as Administrative Surveyor until her retirement. 

            She is survived by her husband, Pastor James “Jim” Hickman, her children, Christopher Nance and wife, Melissa of Union, Rebecca Nance Sweezy of Spartanburg, Michelle Nance Timms and husband, Jamie of Spartanburg, Lisa Hickman Bayse and husband, Tony of Kinards, and C. Allen Hickman and wife, Candace of Columbus, GA.  

            She is also survived by her two sisters, Linda Vinson Jarrett of Jonesville and Diane Vinson Coleman and husband, Earl of Union.  She is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. 

            She was predeceased by her brother, William Vinson and her sister, Patsy Vinson Barnado.  She was also predeceased by her former husband, Robert G. Sprouse Jr., and William Vearl Nance, her first husband. 

            The family would like to express their appreciation to Spartanburg Regional Hospice for their care and compassion shown to Joan and her family. 

            Joan was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and a former member of New Hope Methodist Church. She was a quilting, embroidery, and sewing enthusiast. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her honor to The American Nurses Foundation, 8515 Georgia Ave., Suite 400, Silver Spring, MD 20910.

            Receiving of friends and family will be at 1:00 PM followed by a Celebration of Life service at 2:00 PM Saturday, November 12, 2022, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Lee Coyle. Burial will follow at New Hope United Methodist Church. 

            Active pallbearers will be Brian Jarrett, Scott Jarrett, William Nance, Zachary Lawson, Tony Bayse, Allen Hickman, Cade Sweezy, and Jacob Sweezy.

            The family will be at the home, 143 Clarendon Place of Union.
