John Patrick (Pat) Matthews

Mr. John Patrick “Pat” Matthews, age 90, widower of Nancy Davis Matthews, formerly of Union, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at the Richard M. Campbell VA Home in Anderson.

Mr. Matthews was born in Chester, June 3, 1930, a son of the late Willie B. and Ada McKeown Matthews. He was formerly employed with Torrington Co., and enjoyed working on cars and was an avid reader. Mr. Matthews was a veteran of the US Army having served in the Korean War and was of the Presbyterian faith. He enjoyed helping others anyway he could and was loved by many. He was affectionately known as “Papa” by all his beloved granddaughters.

Surviving are two daughters, Karen Sue Brown of Union and Lisa Sherrill Robbins and husband Aaron of Easley; a son, Donald Wayne Sprouse of Florida; three granddaughters, Ashley Neel, Kaitlyn Brown and Lindsey Robbins and one great-granddaughter, Amber Rain Gardin. Mr. Matthews was predeceased by two brothers, and five sisters.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, September 6, 2020 at Philippi Baptist Church cemetery conducted by Rev. Robert Scott.

Pallbearers will be Steve Gibson, Garrett Gibson, Robert Palmer, C.J. Gardin, Jon Neel, Griffin Conner, Mack Robbins and Keith Vanderford.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 until 3:00 PM Sunday at the church prior to the services.

The family will be at their respective homes.
