Mr. Ralph Eugene “Gene” (Cuz) Gregory, age 88, husband of Barbara Harris Gregory, of 707 E. Main St., Union, passed away Saturday, January 8, 2022 at his home.
Mr. Gregory was born March 10, 1933 in Union, a son of the late Will Gregory and Hilda Saunders Gregory. In 1965, he founded Gene’s Fine Foods. Previously he worked for Jete Long at Monarch Mill where he drove the “dope” wagon. Gene was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church. He loved sports, particularly baseball and the Atlanta Braves. Gene was active in local, state, and national politics. He enjoyed mentoring and advising people. Since COVID, Gene enjoyed traveling with his family to his favorite destinations, Myrtle Beach and Waynesville. He loved his family endlessly and enjoyed providing for them, he and his wife Barbara were constantly together at work, home, and leisurely. He is the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 67 years are, a daughter, Amanda Gregory-Leigh of Union; a granddaughter, Michelle Weil of Summerville; five great-grandchildren, Richard Arthur “Drue” Owen, IV of Summerville, Samuel R. Weil of Summerville, and LilyAnna Weil of Summerville and Christian Weil of Ft. Campbell, KY and Aiden Weil of Fairfield, CA; a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Gregory of Union; two brothers-in-law, Stan Harris and wife Cindy of Union and Grady Harris and wife Donna of Spartanburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Judson James Gregory and wife Pearl and Arthur L. Gregory and two sisters, Willie Mae Ashford and husband E.R. “Bud” and Alti Bell Colson McCoy.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. John Culp and Rev. Roger Estes. Burial will follow at Union Memorial Gardens
Active pallbearers will be Roger Wade, Mark Wade, Nick Shetley, Rusty Marsh, Phillip Gregory, Jason Gregory, Tony Gregory, and Gator Hudson. The following are asked to sit in a group and serve as the honorary escort, all employees of Gene’s Fine Foods, Gary “Twinkey” Sullivan, Billy Marsh, James Coffer, Brown Fant, Allen Black, Billy and Barbara Medford, Kenny Proctor, and Terry Gregory.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 until 2:00 PM at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
