Rev. Everette Smith Obituary

Reverend Everette James Smith, Sr, 94, passed away on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at Duke Medical Center. He was born May 31, 1927 in Union SC, the son of the late Russell and Alma Lawson Smith. In addition to his parents, Rev. Smith was predeceased by his wife Oma Lee Stepp Smith and two brothers, Al Smith and Rod Smith.

Rev. Smith was retired from over 50 years of active ministry to Brown’s Creek Baptist Church in Union, SC, Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, NC, Lakewood Baptist Church in Durham, NC, and Lystra Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, NC. He was a US Army veteran, and a longtime member of the Durham Civitan Club.

He is survived by his son Everette James Smith Jr. (Linda), daughter Debbie Glover (Ronnie), and daughter Evalee Parker (Joe). Rev. Smith will be missed by all, including his six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Among the things he enjoyed was reading as many local newspapers as possible, talking about his children and grandchildren, carefully preparing his Sunday sermons with messages of inclusion and harmony, visiting with friends, telling a good joke, watching Clemson football, eating sweets, and hanging out with his dog, Buddy.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, July 16, 2021 at Clements Funeral Home in Durham, NC. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Lystra Baptist Church, 686 Lystra Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27517, 919-933-6812.
