Thomas Coffer Obituary

Mr. Thomas Lee Coffer, age 92, passed away Friday, January 7, 2022.  He was born in Greensboro, North Carolina on December 16, 1929, a son of the late Margaret James Coffer and Silas Coffer. He was a graduate of Rankin High School, and soon after began work at Cone Mills Textile Corporation. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Ann Newton, on August 18, 1951, and their first child, James, was born in 1954 followed later by the birth of their daughter Jennifer.

Tom moved his young family, along with his mother Margaret, to Union for an opportunity to advance with Cone Mills at their new plant near Carlisle, SC.  Their sons Jeff and Jay were born after moving to Union and the family enjoyed a wonderful life together until Barbara’s sudden passing in 1970.  Tom married Carol Keisler in 1974, and they spent many years together until Carol’s passing in 2016.

He is survived by his loving family; children, James Coffer (Cynthia), Jennifer Murphy (Ricky), Jeff Coffer (Mary), and Jay Coffer (Holly); his grandchildren Susan Allen (Nicholas), Scott Coffer, Amanda McDade (Adam), Matthew Coffer, Michael Coffer, Meagan Coffer (Hamilton), Nick Coffer (Mary), and Hannah Coffer (Clint), as well as nine great-grandchildren.

Tom Coffer was a man of many accomplishments and interests. He owned and operated Hobby Prints, Inc. until his retirement.  As a young man he loved to fish and play checkers, and the richness of his life was shown in the many stories he loved to tell.  Most importantly, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and person of great faith, serving Tabernacle Baptist Church in multiple roles over the years. He was also a good friend and wise counselor to many. We were so fortunate to have him with us on this earth for such a long time.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at Tabernacle Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Mike Moody, with burial to follow at Union Memorial Gardens.  Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1:00 until 1:50 PM at the church.

Active pallbearers will be Scott Coffer, Nicholas Coffer, Nicholas Allen, Monty Kingsmore, Jamison England, and Jeremy Hockgeiger.

The following are asked to sit in a group and serve as the honorary pallbearers.  Members of the Lynn Eaves Sunday School class, Hobby Prints employees, Nancy and Maurice Bevis, and Dudley and Hazel Adams.

The family would like extend appreciation for the care shown by the staff and nurses of Heartland Healthcare of Union.

The family will be at the home of his son James and Cynthia, 101 Carter Street.

Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church, 915 S. Pinckney Street, Union, SC  29379.
