Samuel A. "Smiley" Scott

Mr. Samuel A. "Smiley" Scott, age 74, husband of Gayle "Babe" Newton Scott of 317 Flat Drive, Buffalo, SC died Monday, December 31, 2007 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness.

Mr. Scott was born in Union County, SC September 17, 1933, a son of the late Samuel A. Scott, Sr and Eloiza Laws Scott. He retired from Milliken Co, Midway Plant and was a member of Full Gospel Tabernacle of God Church. Mr. Scott was a former member of the S.C. National Guard and was a member of Duncan Masonic Lodge #256 of Buffalo.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Michelle Austin of Buffalo; three sisters: Gloria Carroll of Barnwell, Catherine Palmer and husband Harold of Columbia and Joan Wall of Atlanta, Ga; an aunt, Myrtle Laws of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Scott was predeceased by two sisters, Nina Pearl Shetley and Ann Fry.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, January 3, 2008 at the Full Gospel Tabernacle of God Church conducted by Rev. Ricky Cook and Rev. Tim Anderson. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Bob Wilkins, Tom Palmer, John Palmer, Brian Gardner, Chris Boulware and Ellis Palmer. The following are asked to assemble at the church at 1:45 PM to form the Honorary Escort: the staff of Union County Recycling Centers, Bud Broom, Jerry McMillian, Robert Newton, Donald Hope Howell, C.L. Babb, Carl Berry, Jack Rector, Keith Gallman, Eddie Boulware, Craig Price, Lynn Phillips and Jimmy Rector.

Minnie "Louise" Farr
Formerly of Union

Miss Minnie "Louise" Farr, age 79 formerly of Union, SC died Monday, December 31, 2007 at Magnolia Place, Spartanburg, SC.

Miss Farr was born in Union, SC September 26, 1928, a daughter of the late David Farr and Minnie Bentley Farr Alman. She was a member of Duncan Acres United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a sister, Alsie Inman of Union; three nieces: Yvonne Clardy of Spartanburg, Dianne Horne of Union and Margie Hall of Spartanburg; a nephew, Danny Inman of Charlotte, NC; a special great-great-nephew, William Horne and a number of great nieces and nephews. Miss Farr was predeceased by two sisters, Lucille Fowler and Lillie Mae Davis and three brothers: Victor Farr, Jenkins Farr and J.C. Farr and a step-father, Marvin Alman.

Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, January 3, 2008 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Tommy Bailey.

Visitation will be held 7:00-8:30 PM Wednesday night at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Donald Gene Lovelace, Sr.
Spartanburg, SC

Mr. Donald Gene Lovelace, Sr, age 55, husband of Susan Kay Shetley Lovelace of 4430 Clifton Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC died Monday, December 31, 2007 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.

Mr. Lovelace was born in Union, SC June 29, 1952, a son of Dora Beard Tollerud of Florida and the late James Benjamin Lovelace. He was a graduate of Union High School, a former textile employee and was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church in Pacolet.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a daughter, Suzanne Sherwani and husband Sameer of Spartanburg; a son, Donny Lovelace, Jr. of Decatur, Ga and a sister, Michelle Lynn Boyer of Spartanburg. Mr. Lovelace was predeceased by a brother, James Benjamin Lovelace, Jr.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at Morning Star Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Andrew Carrigan. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Michael Berry, Neil Shetley, David Duckett, David Putnam, Johnathan Duckett and Brad Shetley.

Visitation will be held 7:00-9:00 PM Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Bobby Jack Fullbright

Mr. Bobby Jack Fullbright, age 71 of 404 Railroad Street, Union, SC, widow of Sarah Warr Fullbright died Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at his home.

Mr. Fullbright was born in Union County, SC January 24, 1936, a son of the late John Henry Fullbright and Gladys Ann Vincent Fullbright. He retired from the South Carolina Department of Transportation in Spartanburg and was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Clinton. Mr. Fullbright was also a member of the Ole Fiddler’s Convention.

Surviving are three daughters: Judy Bass of the home, Christie Ward and husband Glenn and Gladys Ann McDaniel and husband William all of Union; two sons: Robert Warr and wife Loretta and Jimmy Warr and wife Tammy all of Union; a sister, Eunice Betenbaugh; a brother, John Marvin Fullbright and wife Julie all of Union; a granddaughter, Jessica Elizabeth Bass of the home; seven grandsons: John Patrick Cipriano, Jr, Robert Nicholas Cipriano, Zack Warr, D.J. Warr, Steven Warr, J.R. Warr and Colby Bright all of Union and a great-granddaughter, Kelsy Nicole Cipriano. Mr. Fullbright was predeceased by a son, Bobby Gene Fullbright and a brother, Samuel Herbert Fullbright.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, January 4, 2008 at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Pastor Alex Romanov. Special music will be provided by Thomas Vincent and Donnie Estes. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery.

C.H. "Bert" King, Sr.
Jonesville, SC

Mr. C.H. "Bert" King, Sr, age 79 of Eden Terrace of Spartanburg, formerly of Lake Drive, Union, died Monday, December 31, 2007 at the Hospice House of Spartanburg, SC.

Mr. King was born in Chesterfield, SC May 4, 1928, a son of the late James Clarence and Ethel Driggers King. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where he served in many capacities as long as his health permitted. Mr. King retired from the S.C. Highway Patrol and was formerly employed with the S.C. Department of Corrections. He also retired from the South Carolina National Guards after thirty-two years of service; was a past officer with the Gideons Association; a member of the S.C. Law Enforcement Association and a member of Masonic Lodge #75. Mr. King enjoyed raising cattle and horses.

Mr. King is survived by a daughter, Donna K. Still and husband Warren of Columbia; a son, Calvin H. King, Jr and wife Marian of Jonesville; two sisters: Millie Gandy of Chesterfield and Mary Belle Hunt of Hartsville; three grandchildren who were the "light of his life": Christopher Scott King and Jessica Leigh King both of Boiling Springs and Rebecka Lauren Still of Columbia. Mr. King was predeceased by his wife of thirty-two years, Marian E. Scott; a sister, Dorothy Therrell; six brothers: Eddie, Woodrow, Arthur, Elbert, Jack and Jim King.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Friday, January 4, 2008 at Grace United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Gary Byrd and Chaplin Randy Travis. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Raymond L. Koskela
Union, SC

Mr. Raymond Lee Koskela, age 71, husband of Annette Turner Koskela of 497 Strother Rd., Union, SC went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, January 2, 2008.

Mr. Koskela was born in Caldwell, Idaho on January 10, 1936, a son of the late Emlen and May Shearer Koskela. Mr. Koskela was a retired businessman in Bend, Oregon. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving with the 82nd and 101st Paratroopers stationed in Thule, Greenland. Mr. Koskela was a member of the West End Baptist Church, Gaffney,SC.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons: Steve Koskela and wife Laura Crocker Koskela of Santuc, SC and Robert Koskela and wife Charlene of Ellabell, Ga.; two sisters: Joan Nunnaly of Whitebird, ID and Patricia Koskela of Nampa, ID; eleven grandchildren: Bobby Koskela, Matthew Koskela, Bria Koskela, Kalvin Koskela, Kayla Koskela, Kyle Koskela, Joel and Josh Hughett, Jayna Scott and Margaret and Charlotte Greene and two great-grandchildren: Madison Koskela and Aubrey Scott.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Friday, January 4, 2008 in the Chapel at Frederick Memorial Gardens, Gaffney, SC conducted by Rev. Tommy Wright. Burial will follow in Frederick Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 PM at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home in Union. Mr. Koskela will be placed in the chapel at 12:00 PM Friday to await the hour of service.

Mrs. Sara Jolly Bledsoe, age 83, formerly of Union, died Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at St. Luke Hospital in Columbus, N.C.

Mrs. Bledsoe was born in Union, May 19, 1924, a daughter of the late Joseph Joe Jolly and Dora Faye Thompson Jolly. She was a graduate of Union High School and retired from Milliken Co., Ottarary Plant. Mrs. Bledsoe was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church.

Surviving are one daughter: Kathy B. Watts and husband Bill of Clinton Township, MI; one brother: Bobby Joe Jolly of Union. Mrs. Bledsoe was predeceased by two sisters: Nancy Maness and Evelyn Verdin.

Memorial services will be held 1:00 PM Friday, Jan. 4, 2008 at Mon-Aetna Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Benny Green.

Mrs. Kathy Jennings Boulware, age 53 of 134 Westville St., Buffalo, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, at her home after a long illness.

Mrs. Boulware was born in Union, December 11, 1954, a daughter of the late Ernest Edward Jennings and Dolly Ruth White Jennings. She was previously employed with Her Majesty in Union and was a member of Full Gospel Tabernacle of God Church.

Surviving are her husband: Ricky Boulware of the home; a sister: Margaret Palmer and husband Roger of Union; a sister-in-law: Carol Moore of Buffalo; her mother-in-law: Nellie Boulware Lawson of Buffalo; two special friends; Irene Abrams and Brenda Littlejohn both of Buffalo; two nephews: Roger Palmer, Jr. of Georgia and Ernest Jennings, III of Union and her special pet puppy, Bozzer. Mrs. Boulware was predeceased by a brother, Ernest Edward Jennings, Jr.

Mr. Larry Joe Lindler, Jr, age 48, husband of Rhonda Donnelly Lindler of 674 Howell Rd., Jonesville, SC died Monday, December 31, 2007 from injuries received in a hunting accident.

Mr. Lindler was born in La Jolla, CA, November 16, 1959, a son of Larry Joe Lindler, Sr of Union and Carolyn Schumpert Lindler of Whitmire. He was a graduate of Union High School and Spartanburg Technical College and attended Philippi Baptist Church with his family. Mr. Lindler was employed as Welding Supervisor with PCI Energy Services of Lake Bluff IL and was a member of Local 198 Pipe Fitters out Baton Rouge, LA. Mr. Lindler was a loving and dedicated husband, father, son, brother and friend to all who knew him.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are a daughter: Katelyn Jade Lindler of the home; two sisters: Jody Howell and husband Mark of Charleston and Marta Bostic and husband Pete of Whitmire; one brother: Jon G. Mrs. Myrtle P. Scott, age 92, died on January 2, 2008 in Greenville, SC among relatives and friends. Mrs. Scott was pre-deceased by her husband, Thad Hames Scott. Mr. and Mrs. Scott were long-time residents of Wakefield, VA and owned a business there until they both retired years ago. Both were long-term members of Wakefield United Methodist Church where Mrs. Scott was as a choir member for a number of years and served in the children’s choir ministry.

Surviving are nephews Bud Scott of Laguna Nigel, CA; Bill Scott of North Augusta, SC; Bob Scott of Greenville, SC; and nieces, Dorothy Keen and Vivian Pennington of Hickson, TN.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 5, 2008 at New Hope Methodist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Scott Gilmer.

Elizabeth Kali DePratter, six month old daughter of Fred DePratter and Mary Jo Justice DePratter of 396 Covered Bridge Rd., Gaffney, SC died Thursday, January 3, 2008 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Surviving in addition to her parents are a sister, Paige DePratter of the home; two brothers, Bradley Dane DePratter of Union and Aron Leo DePratter of Buffalo; maternal grandfather, Joseph Justice of Gaffney; paternal grandmother, Elizabeth H. DePratter of Fairview, NC ; special cousins: Austin Henderson, Joshua Justice, Colby, Collin, Cody Barber and Nikkie Blackwell and a number of aunts, uncles. Elizabeth was predeceased by maternal grandmother, Dorothy Justice and paternal grandfather, Fred Allen DePratter, Sr.

Nathalee Jones Barnett

Mrs. Nathalee "Mama Nee" Jones Barnett, age 93 of 119 Peay Avenue, Union, SC, widow of Oscar R. Barnett died at her home on Saturday, January 5, 2008 after a long illness.

Mrs. Barnett was born in Buffalo, SC on June 21, 1914, a daughter of the late John Pulham and Emma Title Jones. She graduated from Spartanburg High School and Cecil’s Business College. She was a member of Mon-Aetna Baptist Church, a member and former teacher of the Dorcas Sunday School Class and a member of the Winnie Couch Circle. She also attended the Union Senior Center. Mrs. Barnett was retired from Milliken & Co and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Mrs. Barnett was predeceased by two sister, two brothers and one grandson, Matthew Garner.

Mrs. Barnett is the loving mother of three daughters: Jerris Garner and husband Robert c., Teala Walker and husband M. Gregg and Barbara Russell and husband Dennis C. all of Union; six grandchildren: Scott Garner and wife Becky, Monica Trammell and husband Tim, Timothy Walker and wife Tiffany, Michael Walker and wife Amy, Patrick Russell and wife Emily and Stephen Russell and wife Stephanie; twelve great-grandchildren: Britt Garner, Jacob Trammell, Justin Caldwell, Ellis Lancaster, Jr., Amanda Price, Thomas Walker, Tyler Walker, Andrew Walker, David Thomas White, Madyson Russell, Mason Russell and Michael Lee Russell and two great-great-grandchildren.

Miss Tucker was born in Spartanburg, SC, May 23, 1982, a daughter of Tammy Smith Cannon of Union and Gerald Tucker of Buffalo. She was employed with Signature Loans and attended Lakeside Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her parents are a son, Taegan Kyle Bishop of the home; a step-father, Danny Cannon of Union; a brother, Benjamin Gerald Tucker, Jr.; maternal grandparents, Joanne V. and Earl Smith of Union; paternal grandfather, Grady Tucker; four cousins: Jeffrey Tucker, Kyle Smith, Amanda Broome and Brooke Smith Crawford and special friends, Frona Phillips and Kyle Bishop. Miss Tucker was predeceased by paternal grandmother, Bennye Tucker.

Mrs. Gault was born in Union, SC May 3, 1951, a daughter of the late Hoyt Earl "Tom" Fowler and Lois Edith Manus Fowler. She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Lacey Elizabeth French of the home; a son, Ron Gault and wife Peggy of Union; two sisters: Brenda Farr and Mary French both of Union and two brothers: Wayne Fowler and wife Wanda and Jerry Dean Fowler and wife Brenda all of Union.

William L. "Bill" Arthur
Union, S.C.

Mr. William Lefoy "Bill" Arthur, age 81, husband of Mary Crocker Arthur of 115 Harris Dr., Union, died Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at Oakmont of Union.

Mr. Arthur was born in Union, December 19, 1926, a son of the late Morris Lefoy Arthur and Nettie Bates Arthur. He was a graduate of Union High School class of 1945, Spartanburg Junior College class of 1948 and Florida State University class of 1955. Mr. Arthur was retired from the U.S. Forestry Service having worked from 1953 until 1987 and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where he was a member of the choir and was a former Sunday School teacher.

For over 40 years, Mr. Arthur served as a Boy Scout Leader of Troop # 48 at Bethel United Methodist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are one son: William Earl Sprouse of the home; three sisters: Joyce A. Parsons of Stryker, OH, Betty A. McNease and husband Albert and Sarah Frances Arthur all of Union; one brother: Wilson Doil Arthur and wife Maria Gibbs Arthur of Union; numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Hamilton Gray Moore, age 73, husband of Doris Pearson Moore of 213 Spruce Street, Union, SC died Thursday, January 10, 2008 at Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness.

Mr. Moore was born in Inman, SC January 5, 1935, a son of the late Loren W. Moore and Buna Outz Moore Beaudrot. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and retired from Torrington Company-Tyger River Plant. Mr. Moore was a member of Unity United Methodist Church and was a Board Member of the Salvation Army since 1994. He was also a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer. Mr. Moore was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mr. Moore is survived by several cousins.

Memorial service will be held 1:30 PM Sunday, January 13, 2008 at the Salvation Army of Union conducted by Captain Gene Harrell and Rev. Allen Senn. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park in Greenville, SC.

Mr. Barber was born in Union, SC August 22, 1936, a son of the late David Barber and Rachel Sumner Barber. He retired from United Merchants-Buffalo Plant and was a member of New Life Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters: Lisa Lancaster and husband Donald "Ned" of Union and Amanda Cole and husband Ron of Spartanburg; two sons: Tim Barber and wife Delores of Waterloo, SC and Perry Barber and wife Jackie of Union; two sisters: Linda Gregory and Mary Hyder and husband Maurice all of Union; eight grandchildren: Blane Lancaster and wife Beth, Mallori Lancaster, Jenna Barber, Kayce Barber, Leigh Ann Barber, Brad Barber, Megan Conley and Katelyn Conley and a great-grandson, Ayden Lancaster who was the light of his great-grandfather’s life. Mrs. Scott was born in Union, July 12, 1918 a daughter of the late Robert Spurgeon. and Janie Foster Adams. She was a member of Hebron Baptist Church and retired from the State of South Carolina, Department of Revenue.

Mrs. Scott is survived by one daughter, with whom she made her home, Pamela Rebecca Armstrong, of Matthews, NC.. She is also survived by a sister, Rebecca Bogan, of Spartanburg, brother; Harold "Cotton" Adams, of Atlanta, GA; a grandson; William Fetter of Richmond, VA and a grand daughter Kathryn Wells of Des Moines, Iowa.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008 at Union Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Millwood was born in Union County, SC July 25, 1920, a daughter of the late Paul Nelson, Sr and Elouise Brock Nelson. She retired from United Merchants- Union Plant and was a member of Ottaray Baptist Church. Mrs. Millwood was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Bobby Quinn of Union; three grandchildren: Any Quinn Owenby, April Quinn and Angela Quinn; three great-grandchildren: Taylor Quinn, Trevor Owenby and Makayla Quinn and special friends: Shirley Dorsey, Helen Garner, Emily Quinn, Diane Tedder and Martha Greer. Mrs. Oglesby was born in Kline, SC December 18, 1921, a daughter of the late John James Moody and Addie Brabham Moody. She was a Cum Laude graduate of Anderson University. Mrs. Oglesby was a member of First Baptist Church of Allendale where she was a former Sunday School Teacher and a past member of the Board of Allendale County Library. She retired from the Department of Navy as a Civil Service Employee.

Surviving are a two daughters: Lynn O. Grove and husband Bobby of Hanahan, SC and Anne O. Winn of Spartanburg; a son, Willie H. "Bill" Oglesby of Folly Beach, SC; two granddaughters: Kimberly O. Mrs. Dabbs was born in Serverville, TN December 25, 1911, a daughter of the late James Justice and Frances Ball Justice. She was a seamstress out of her home for many years and was a member of Lockhart Free Will Baptist Church. Mrs. Dabbs was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are four sons: James Clarence "Buster" Dabbs and wife Ruth of York, Willie Dean Dabbs of Tennessee, Olin Keith Dabbs and wife Laura and Carl Denver Dabbs all of Lockhart; ten grandchildren: Dennis Dabbs, Lori Ann Briggs, Mary Ruth Johnson, Jovani Dabbs, Vincent Dabbs, Olin Keith Dabbs, Jr, Sherri Turner, Michelle Brannon, Carla Martin and Caren Farr; fourteen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Dabbs was predeceased by three sisters and four brothers.

Mrs. Morrow was born in Union, August 24, 1931, a daughter of the late Kelly and Bertie Lawson Valentine. She was a graduate of the Charlotte Memorial School of Nursing now known as the Carolinas College of Health Sciences in Charlotte, NC. She retired from the Union County Schools as a Health Occupational Instructor, having previously worked as a registered nurse with Wallace Thomson Hospital. She was a member of several professional nursing associations. Mrs. Morrow was a faithful member of Westside Baptist Church and Crestview Baptist Church and was devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are two sons: Steve Morrow and wife Kathy of Jonesville, and Kevin Morrow and wife Lisa of Union; two sisters: Geneva Valentine of Union and Hazel Self of Gaffney; two brothers: Dean Valentine and wife Rowena of Spartanburg and James E. "Pap" Valentine and wife Alma of Union; a sister-in-law: Alice Valentine of Union; special friends: Martha and Charlie Robinson and Elizabeth Shelton; 5 grandchildren: David Morrow and wife Becca, Mac Morrow, Kayla Scott, Jerrad Scott, Brandon Stone and Ben Stone; and a number of special nieces and nephews. Mr. Stewart was born in the Sedelia community of Union Co., October 2, 1914, a son of the late Willie David Stewart and Mary Pauline Bailey Stewart. He was retired from Lockhart Power Co. and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lockhart. Mr. Stewart was a former mason.

Surviving are two daughters: Cecelia James and husband Harold of Greer, and Camelia Garrison and husband Frank of Leeds, AL; one brother: Bobby Stewart of Union; three grandchildren: Stewart James, Stephanie James Lievenrood and Wes Garrison; three great-grandchildren: William Weston Garrison, Rhea Garrison and Payton Alley James. Mr. Finch was born in Pauline, SC September 10, 1918, a son of the late William Daniel Finch and Mellie Smith Finch. He was a 1936 graduate of Pauline High School and a Veteran of the U.S. Army having served in World War II. Mr. Finch was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church and was retired farmer. He was first married to the late Helen Bates Bryan Finch. Mr. Finch was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Mrs. Eura Vernelle Stone Gavalas, age 69, wife of Rev. Dr. Anthony N. Gavalas of 224 Adams Lake Rd., Union, SC died Monday, January 21, 2008 at Wallace Thomson Hopsital.

Mrs. Gavalas was born in Effingham, SC July 28, 1938, a daughter of the late Wilbur C. and Marie Farrell Stone. She was a 1960 graduate of Winthrop College receiving a B.A. in Art Education. Mrs. Gavalas was a teacher with the Aiken and Charleston County School System for twelve years where she was one of many inaugural teachers in the Head Start Program in Aiken county during the early 1970's. Mrs Gavalas was an Artist and a member of Grace United Methodist Church where she taught many young people during her husband’s pastorate. She was also a Sunday School Teacher for many years, having taught in both the Culp-Wagnon and David Clyburn classes, a member of Johnnie Sanders Circle and life long member of the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Gavalas taught art in the Grace United Methodist Child Enrichment Program for three years. She married Rev. Dr. Anthony N. Gavalas February 14, 1970.

Surviving in addition to her husband are four children: Vikena Yutz and husband Edward J. of Dallas, Ga, Christa Godwin and husband Drew of Lake City, SC, Frances Carswell and husband Bucky of Travelers Rest, SC and George Gavalas and wife Natalie of Athens, Ga; a step-son, Nick Gavalas and wife Charlotte of N. Augusta, SC; two sisters: Ruth Hill of Lexington, SC and Linda Baxley of North Augusta, SC; eight grandchildren: Anthony N. Gavalas, II, Alyssa Kaye Gavalas, Farrel Marie Godwin, Thomas McClendon Godwin, Aerie Carswell, Matthew Carswell, George Edward Yutz and Nicholas A. Gavalas. Mrs. Gavalas was predeceased by a sister, Mary Ann Long.

He was a graduate of Union High School and was formerly employed at the Whitten Center and Union County Disabilities and Special Needs. Mr. Moss was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church and was a Mason and Shriner.

Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter: Michelle Cooper and husband Clint of Lockhart; two sons: Fredrick E. Moss, Jr. of Whitmire, and Eric J. Cardwell and wife Melissa of Union; a sister: Pam Lipsey and husband Steve of Jonesville; two brothers: Mike Moss and wife Cheryl of Union, Dennis Moss and wife Jan of Gaffney; a sister-in-law: Connie Moss of Hickory Grove; two grandchildren: Zoe Cooper and Mallori Cardwell and a number of nieces and nephews. Mr. Moss was pre-deceased by a brother: Timmy Moss, grandparents: Wallace and Lena Greer Ivey and John H. and Maude Moss.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by Rev. Manning Strickland and Rev. Jerry Ford. Burial will be at Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Bruce Brasington, Steve Eubanks, David Eubanks, Mark Eubanks, Ray Barber, Jr., Steve Lipsey, Jr., Jonathan Moss, Shaun Moss, Mitchell Moss, and Brandon Moss. Ms. Linda Louise Long, age 63, of 125 Amber Dr., Lot 8 Union, SC., died Sunday, January 27, 2008.

Ms. Long was born in Caldwell, NC, January 29, 1944, a daughter of the late Burl Walker and Mary Preswood Walker. She was employed with Union County High School.

Survivors are a daughter, Ginger Winters and husband Paul of Union; two sisters, Barbara Eller and Sarah Burchetter both of Lenoir, NC.; a granddaughter, Sierra Winters and two grandsons, Josh and Jacob Winters all of Union.

Memorial services will be held 7:00 PM Wednesday, January 30, 2008, at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by The Reverend Mr. Harry Pecko and Reverend Mr. James E. Palmer.

Mrs. Frances Keller James, age 98, widow of B.B "Beanie" James Jr. formerly of Union, passed away Monday, Jan. 28, 2008 at the Southminster Retirement Community in Charlotte.

Mrs. James was born in Union, October 1, 1909, a daughter of the late George Theodore Keller, Sr. and Mabel Salley Keller. She was a graduate of Union High School and Ashley Hall of Charleston. Mrs. James was a life long member of the First Presbyterian Church of Union where she also retired as a kindergarten teacher after 34 years.

Surviving are a daughter: Frances Whitney and husband Abbott of Charlotte; a grandson: Abbott Whitney, III; two granddaughters: Keller Smith and husband Laurens, and Virginia McBryde and husband Mac; two great-granddaughters: Whitney Smith and Frances McBryde; niece: Salley Jenkinson and husband Billy and their children, Will Jenkinson and wife Meredith, Anne Jenkinson and Louisa Jenkinson, and their grandchild, Ridge Jenkinson; niece: Helen Keller; nephew: Ted Keller. Mrs. James was preceded in death by a brother and sister-in-law: George and Anne Keller.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, January 31, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev. Robert Alexander. Burial will be in the Presbyterian Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 1:00 until 2:00 PM Thursday prior to the service in the church parlor.

Ms. Rebecca Nicole Mowbray Earle age 31 of Lugoff, SC, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2008 after brief battle with cancer.

Ms. Earle is the daughter of John and Dottie O’Dell Mowbray, and the granddaughter of the late Howard and Dot O’Dell. Surviving are two children, a daughter, Sydnee Branham and a son, Zachary Earle.

Mrs. Margie Lee Slack "Nana" Miller, age 65, wife of Phillip S. Miller of 3867 Jonesville Lockhart Hwy., Lockhart, SC died Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at Regional Hospice Home in Spartanburg, SC.

Mrs. Miller was born in Woodruff, SC January 5, 1943, a daughter of the late Henry Thomas Slack and Ruby Lee Knighton Slack. She was a seamstress who worked out of her home for many years and was a member of Calvary Free Will Baptist Church. Mrs. Miller was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend who was affectionately known as "Nana" by many.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Leeann M. Gregory and husband Richard of Lewisville; two sons: Billy Branch of Burlington, NC and Jimmy Miller and wife Dee of Union; a sister, Mary Frances Knox of Lockhart; four grandchildren: Austen Miller, Lee Elrod, Ariel Gregory and Colt Gregory and one great-grandson: Brent Elrod.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, January 31, 2008 at Calvary Free Will Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Paul Childers and Rev. Percy Cunningham. Burial will be in the Lockhart Cemetery.

Fannie Ruth Boulware

Ms. Fannie Ruth "Schooner" Boulware, age 78 formerly of 208 Gin Circle, Buffalo, SC died Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Ms. Boulware was born in Fairfield County, SC November 25, 1929, a daughter of the late Urban Boulware and Annie Fee Boulware. She retired from United Merchants-Buffalo Plant and was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Cathy Boulware of the home; two brothers: Rion Boulware and wife Thelma of Buffalo and Grady Boulware of the home and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held 3:00 PM Thursday, January 31, 2008 at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by Rev. Ricky Cook.

Ms. Boulware’s nephews will serve as active pallbearers.

Visitation will be held immediately following the service at the graveside.

The family is at their respective homes.

Mrs. Vera Carter Burns, age 98, widow of Walter Lee Burns, formerly of Lockhart, died Thursday, January 31, 2008 at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home.

Mrs. Burns was born in Buffalo, December 4, 1909, a daughter of the late Will V. Carter and Cora Lybrand Carter. She was a graduate of Lockhart High School and was a faithful member of Lockhart United Methodist Church where she was a former member of the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Burns was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Surviving are a son: LeBron Burns and wife Billy Ray of Lockhart; five grandchildren: Andy Burns and Darrell Burns both of Spartanburg, Dawn B. Knox of Union, Adairr Burns and Melanie Brewington both of Lockhart; two great-grandchildren: Lindsay B. Horton and Janie Cecilia Knox. Mrs. Burns was predeceased by a son: Walter A. Burns.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, February 2, 2008, at Lockhart United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Alan Quarles. Burial will be Union Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be 6:00 until 8:00 PM Friday evening at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
